We are pleased that we have finished our first marine construction project. A 240 foot pier using both driven pylons and granite cribbing to accommodate mud bottom versus ledge. After this, I’d say, we are officially in the Marine construction business and are taking reservations for residential piers, floats, ramps, and pile driving. A huge thank you to Tibbits Marine Contractors who we subcontracted under for this job. It was a great learning experience and we look forward to our next project.

The Crew of the Josh keep chipping away at our pier build. Chief Engineer and Heavy Equipment operator extraordinaire Daren is steady at it. For this job everything has to be timed by the tides, as the tide goes out an excavator is dropped off on a ledge and it builds until the tide comes back in and makes it necessary to load it back on the barge.

This is a follow up to yesterday’s post regarding the M/V “The Bucket List 2” that we were able to float and ground out on Pettegrow Beach yesterday. Machiasport Harbormaster David Cale gave us an update on the vessels fate.

The vessel was too heavy and too brittle to haul in one piece. It was necessary to use an excavator to tear the vessel apart and load it piecemeal into dump trucks for disposal. The weight preventing lifting was quickly apparent as the vessels gas tank was still full of gasoline (It was safely removed without a spill) and 2’ of mud filled the bilges from its long stay on the bottom.

We never intended to become a salvage company but as we completed our third salvage for the year today I think we’ve become one by default. The M/V “The Bucket List 2” sank in Bucks Harbor in Machiasport last October and today was lifted and beached. The vessel has been a hazard to Navigation having sank in shallow water in the inner harbor mooring field, fortunately this is one less hazard to worry about for those making a living out of this harbor.

This was a stretch for 3 baby tugs, but Sea Lark and two truckable push boats managed to push this monster into the lee of Porcupine Island before bad storm surge hit and then a few days later we pushed them back. Our own soon to be Capt. Anna Spring with her newly minted 1,600 Master Oceans ran the push boat Desperado as her first short term command! She did awesome by the way/ she is a natural!

The monster pair of barges we had the pleasure to move are engaged by Agate Construction in the building of the Bar Harbor Breakwater between MDI & Porcupine Island.

Today we add to our fleet of equipment “Manny” a 1957 Manitowoc Crane rated for lifting 25 Ton. With this acquisition we will be getting into marine construction. Our next step will be sourcing pile driving equipment, clamshells, and other assorted accessories to diversify the use of the crane.
A thank you to Exclusive Heavy Haul for transporting the unit from New Bedford, Fitzgerald’s Metal work for helping disassemble for shipping, and our own in house Chief Daren for taking the lead on this project.

Eastport says a permanent farewell to the Super Transporter as she was sold by Cooke Aquaculture to King Food of Barbados. Sea Lark towed the ol’ girl to Front Street Shipyard in Belfast, ME where she will undergo extensive work to her bottom and depart for the Venezuelan trade.

We had the pleasure this last week of helping Support the USS Lassen (DDG-82) for the Naval Destroyers 4th of July visit to Eastport, ME. Danforth Horse with the help of our hometown heroes from Washington County Sheriff’s Dept. & Pleasant Point PD acted as the waterborne security for the Lassen.
