June is Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month, making it the perfect time to discuss a common but often misunderstood symptom of dementia: Sundowning.
Sundowning refers to a pattern where individuals living with dementia experience increased confusion, anxiety, agitation, restlessness, or wandering during the late afternoon and evening hours.
You may notice your loved one:
•Becoming more confused as the day goes on
•Asking repetitive questions more frequently
•Pacing or appearing restless
•Becoming anxious, fearful, or upset
•Having difficulty sleeping at night
•Wanting to “go home” even when they are already home
While experts don’t know the exact cause, factors such as fatigue, changes in lighting, disrupted sleep patterns, overstimulation, and hunger or thirst may contribute.
Here are a few ways families can help:
✅ Maintain a consistent daily routine
✅ Encourage exposure to natural daylight during the day
✅ Limit caffeine later in the day
✅ Reduce noise and distractions in the evening
✅ Keep rooms well-lit as daylight fades
✅ Offer reassurance and a calm environment
Most importantly, remember that your loved one is not intentionally being difficult. These behaviors are often a result of the changes taking place in the brain.
