Massachusetts State Representative Christopher Flanagan has been indicted by a federal grand jury on charges of wire fraud and falsifying records. While serving as the executive director of the Cape Cod Home Builders Association, Flanagan allegedly embezzled approximately $36,000 between November 2021 and January 2023. Prosecutors claim he diverted these funds for personal expenses, including campaign debts, household items, clothing, and even payments for psychic services.
To conceal the misappropriation, Flanagan is accused of using another employee’s account in the association’s bookkeeping system, falsifying records, and backdating transactions. He also allegedly obstructed a campaign finance investigation by providing false information. If convicted, Flanagan faces up to 20 years in prison and asset forfeiture.
This case underscores the critical importance of robust internal controls and vigilant oversight within organizations.
