Tom Shelton in a Bottle

From start to finish, owner and winemaker Tom Shelton is involved in creating and perfecting all that it takes to make award-winning wines. He is particular about everything, from pruning vines to the operation of the bottling line to the freshness of the wines being served in the tasting room. Tom's hands-on approach is one of the reasons that Bordeleau is now recognized

as one of the best wineries in Maryland. With an early interest in agriculture and using management skills developed in the poultry industry, Tom followed an interest spawned when he started making fruit wines while still in his teens. After purchasing a farm in Allen, Maryland in 1998, he planted his first grape vines in 1999. Early plantings were Chardonnay, Vidal Blanc and Chambourcin, and he continued planting additional grape vines each year through 2003. Other varieties planted were Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Sauvignon Blanc. After the 2003 plantings, Tom had to make a decision regarding starting a commercial winery. Weather and soils are critical to the production of good wines, so he had to convince himself that grapes grown on his property could consistently lead to the production of good wines. After considerable deliberation he decided to seek his commercial license in the summer of 2006. With the renewed commitment, eight and one half acres of plantings were added from 2007 to 2011, including new varieties such as Malbec, Petite Verdot, Pinot Grigio, Viognier, and Muscat.

How Does Summer Heat Affect Wine Grapes?

With the arrival of summer temperatures here on the Eastern Shore, many people ask if the heat is good or bad for the vineyard.

The answer? A little heat is great. Too much can be stressful.

☀️ Warm sunny days help grapes:

* Develop sugars needed for fermentation
* Ripen flavors and aromas
* Build color in red wine grapes

🌡️ During extreme heat:

* Grapes can lose moisture and become smaller
* Sugar levels can rise quickly
* Vines may slow down growth to conserve water
* Winemakers and vineyard managers watch carefully to ensure fruit stays balanced

🍇 At Bordeleau, our vineyard team monitors the vines throughout the growing season. Every vintage is a little different because Mother Nature plays a role in every bottle we make.

That’s one of the things that makes wine so fascinating—no two years are exactly alike!

Planning to attend Saturday’s Jimmy Charles Benefit Concert? 🎶🍷

Here are a few things to Know Before You Go:

✅ Bring your own chair and get comfortable on the lawn.
🚫 No outside coolers or outside alcohol permitted.
🍷 Wine and beer will be available for purchase in the Bordeleau tasting room throughout the event.
🍔 B&J’s Soulful Creations Food Truck will be on site with delicious food available for purchase.
⏰ Guests may arrive as early as 3:00 PM.
⭐ VIP Meet & Greet: 4:45–5:30 PM
🎤 Concert begins: 6:00 PM

General Admission tickets will also be available at the door while supplies last, so grab your friends and family and join us for an evening of great music supporting United Way of the Lower Eastern Shore.
