The secret to creating a shade garden …

āœ”ļø TEXTUREāœ”ļø SHAPEāœ”ļø CONTRASTāœ”ļø COLOR

Designing a beautiful garden for the sun is totally different than one for the ā€œnot so sunnyā€ā€¦ and ohh how I love a good shade garden.

In shade, flowers alone won’t carry the show. It’s the layers of foliage, the bold leaves against the delicate ones, the deep greens mixed with silvers, blues, and chartreuse that create the magic. Every texture, every shape, and every contrast matters because shade gardens are all about depth, movement, and creating a space that feels lush, calming, and alive.

A good shade garden doesn’t scream sunny flower borders. To me, it’s more serene and calm but exciting at the same time.

Plants featured: Sun king aralia, Ajuga, Chamaecyparis, Japanese red maple

Spring in New England: Where everyone wants lush summer gardens and Mother Nature is still offering frost warnings and emotional damage. šŸŒ§ļøšŸ˜‚

Friendly reminder from your local garden crew: we are not Amazon Prime with shovels. We’re juggling many clients, muddy boots, delayed weather, and plants that also prefer not to freeze to death.

Your garden is coming. Your hydrangeas have not been forgotten. Your patio pots and window boxes are safe in our thoughts. 🌿

Trust the process… beautiful gardens take a little time🌸

What’s better than plants!

🌸Plant delivery time is better than Christmas morning!

05/07/2026

The time has come….

šŸš› Trucks are rolling in full of blooming beauties ready to be delivered and planted in our clients garden, containers and window boxes.

It’s for sure, a hard and vigorous well balanced time for us. A lot of Advil and stretching. 8 trucks, 14-15 hrs days, 6 days a week for a month and a 1/2 is what it takes to work on Second Nature Designs crew to get it done.

New England weather (especially Martha’s Vineyard) can be brutal. Rain, wind with gusts that actually make you take a step to get grounded. The temps sway from 40 to 80 in a few hours time. Can you imaging what these poor plants think?

These next 6 weeks are worth it in every sense. The proofs in the pudding!

Happy plantings

šŸ‘†Plant these 3 for a winner garden

I’ve have tried almost every plant that is compatable for my zone (7a) to give the biggest impact in the gardens with the least amount of fuss. My motto has always been; WITH FAILURES WILL COME SUCCESS!

There are 3 plants that just work for my Full sun gardens and here they are.

1ļøāƒ£ RUDBECKIA FULGIDA `GOLDSTURM ā€˜black eyed susans’
Is winter hardy from zones 4-9. It is easily grown in average, medium moisture, well-drained soils in full sun. Best in moist, organically rich soils. FYI…the deer love them! naturalized area. Add it to a coastal, butterfly, native, or pollinator garden. Planted in small groups it is suitable for a border or foundation planting.

2ļøāƒ£ ECHINACEA PURPUREA `MAGNUS`purple cone flower
Is winter hardy zones 3-9.
Extra-large pink flowers. A long-lasting cut flower. Where classic coneflower’s petals point down, Magnus’ are held more horizontally. Native to moist prairies, meadows and open woods, Butterflies flutter throughout this lovely plant to sip nectar from the vibrant blooms. Deer resistant and a full sun lover.

3ļøāƒ£ GAURA LINDHEIMERI`SPARKLE WHITE`
This variety is only hardy to zone 6 so for me it’s an annual. But worth the purchase every year and sometimes we get lucky and it comes back. There are many other varieties that are more hardy however, I find them a little too
weedy for a border garden. Full sun and heat/drought tolerant…this sweet cheeks is a soft wispy addition to the garden.

So there you have it.
šŸ‘‡Comment below if you’ve used these varieties!

Guess who’s back?

My favorite bumbles šŸ
I have come clean on this little guy. We were doing some watering and almost drowned this one! So either he’s lethargic because of that or he’s on a pollen high. Nevertheless….bumble recovered fast and is spreading his love everywhere at the Nursery.

A low maintenance must have flowering plant…
It’s almost planting time here in zone 7a for the summer season and I’m here for it! I’m also here for the plants that perform beautifully and are easy to maintain .

Meet Pelargonium peltatum ā€˜Cascade Sofie’ (often called Ivy Geranium)

This stunning plant not only adds beauty to your home or garden but is also super easy to care for.

With its sweet pink blooms and trailing stems, it’s a perfect pick for hanging baskets or window boxes. Plus, they thrive without much help and can bloom all summer long until frost!

My garden has had more character development in 9 months than most TV shows. 🄁

From hopeful spring optimism… to mid-summer ā€œwhy did I plant this many things?ā€ā€¦ to fall’s soft glow-up and every month brought a new personality. And apparently, they all decided to audition in front of my flower beds.

Nine clips. Nine monthly moods.
Some dramatic. Some thriving. Some… in recovery.

Tell me which month you are right now — thriving, spiraling, or pretending everything is fine behind the hydrangeas? 🌸

It’s a garden ghost…

It’s all happened to us at one time or another . You’re working in the garden, your mind is on everything and anything. When all of a sudden, in the corner of your eye something moves! You look, theres nothing so you continue on . A few seconds later, something moves again!
This time you stand up and stare with hopes a furry critter or slithering snake doesn’t jump out at you and secretly hoping it’s a hummingbird or perhaps a butterfly that has made a leaf twitch.

I know you’ve had it happened! Tell me in comments šŸ‘‡what it was! I’ll go first; A frog🐸
