A consuming profession….
One of my favorite parts of landscape design is figuring out how all the pieces are going to play together. So much so, It actually keeps me up at night.
Starting with a blank slate needs a vision and that’s my addiction, finding that vision. Whether it’s a small garden, a few containers or an empty lot that needs a design…..the premonition of what could be is what drives me, that is what fills my cup ☕️
What are the thoughts that swirl in my mind when coming up with a design? I’ve always loved working with stone — different colors, shapes, textures and the way each type of stone can completely change the feeling of a space. There’s something about combining that hardscape with the softness of plants that just works. The hardscape and softscape are really the yin and yang of a garden.
And then there’s color. I love using contrast — dark and light, bold and subtle, fine foliage next to something big and architectural. It’s those differences in texture, shape and color that give a garden depth and keep it interesting.
Of course, designing landscapes usually means a few of my gardens and containers find their way into the story, too. I can’t help myself.
After all these years of designing, I still love the process of taking a blank space and slowly turning it into a garden that feels like it belongs there.
