HVAC WARNING SIGNS YOU DON'T WANT TO IGNORE

Most people don't think about their air conditioning or heating system until it stops working. To avoid being caught off guard by a system that suddenly stops working, it's important to become familiar with the early warning signs of a HVAC problem.

Increased Repairs. Some things get better with age. Unfortunately, your HVAC system is not one of them. Constant repairs or short-term fixes are a sign of early system failure.

Energy Bills are Increasing. If your energy bill is rising but your daily routine remains unchanged, the HVAC is often the reason.

Uncomfortable Temperatures. If your system is no longer keeping your home comfortable, it may be time to change the filter and schedule preventative maintenance.

Something Doesn't Smell or Sound Right. If there is a smell coming from your HVAC system, that is often a sign something is wrong. If you smell mildew, dirty socks, rotten eggs or a chemical odor, call a contractor to help diagnose the source. If you are hearing banging, whistling, rattling or squeaking from your system it could need maintenance or a repair.

Excessive Water. While a HVAC system often produces a small amount of water, excessive water is indicative of a problem.

The average HVAC system lifespan is around 15 years. If your system is getting close to that threshold or has already passed it, you may want to consider replacing it with a newer, ENERGY STAR system. Installed correctly, these high-efficiency units can save up to 20 percent on heating and cooling costs.

N.J. Weather: Blizzard Watch In North Jersey, Statewide Nor'easter Snow Totals Increased

Forecasters say the threat of a nor'easter packing strong winds and heavy snow has increased - so much so that part of New Jersey is now under a blizzard watch. A winter storm warning also has been issued for nearly the rest of the NJ state.

As many as 12 to 18 inches of snow are expected to fall in North and Central Jersey as part of a "major" coastal storm that's expected to slam the state beginning Monday night. Four to 12 could fall on the rest of the NJ state.

Friends, it's time to turn OFF the A/C and turn ON the heat in your houses. If you have a humidifier in your house, open the damper to Winter mode and turn ON the water to the humidifier.
Make sure you turn your heating ON to test it prior to the season starts. Stay warm and enjoy your winter.

Keep Your Heater & AC System Trouble-Free

Change your air filter regularly. Check your air filter every month to establish the proper frequency for air filter replacement, cleaning or replacing the air filter at least every three months. This simple home maintenance task prevents a dirty air filter from forcing your heating and air system to work harder, increasing heating and cooling costs and leading to excess wear and tear.

Don’t neglect your outdoor unit. That big metal box outside of your home actually serves a purpose. Make sure your outdoor unit stays clean by clearing away debris such as weeds, plants, leaves, and other trash that can build up around it. Use a soft broom to remove debris that has gathered on the fins, and a hose to wash off the condensing unit every now and then. Blocked airflow reduces the efficiency of your AC and heating system, so don’t take maintenance on your outdoor unit off your home maintenance checklist just because it’s out of sight.

Keep supply and return vents clear. Check supply and return vents around your home to ensure they are clear of clutter such as furniture, carpets, pet hair, and any other items that could reduce airflow and make your system work harder.

Keep a regular home maintenance schedule. Add caring for your heating and cooling system to your regular schedule of home maintenance tasks. Write tasks on the calendar so they won’t slip your mind during busy periods of life. Your system and your wallet will thank you.
