One of the biggest misconceptions about prescribed burning is that every firebreak has to be constructed from scratch.

Whenever possible, we use natural barriers like lakes, creeks, rock outcrops, or existing roads as part of the burn plan. On this burn, the lake served as a major portion of the firebreak, which reduced prep work while still allowing us to safely meet our objectives.

Every burn unit is unique. Good planning means using the landscape to your advantage whenever it’s appropriate.

I spent some time looking at wildfire hazards around cabins in Hochatown, and the amount of ladder fuels growing right against some of these structures is concerning.

When fire can climb from grasses into shrubs and then into tree canopies, it dramatically increases fire intensity and creates embers that can ignite homes well ahead of the main fire. We’ve seen this happen during catastrophic fires across the West.

The good news is that many of these risks can be significantly reduced with proper vegetation management and defensible space planning.

We saw historic wildfire occurrence here in Oklahoma last year. With record rainfall in the growing season and recent freezes there are staggering amounts of cured fuel all across the state.
