Money talks can feel Hard but Avoiding them can make Life even Harder

I recently had the privilege of joining Tony Steuer on the ‘Get Ready Before Life Happens’ Podcast for a conversation about something I care deeply about:
Talking about Money before life forces us to.

We talked about the shame that can keep money conversations quiet, why knowing what is “enough” matters, and how small conversations today can give the people we love greater clarity when life changes tomorrow.

One of my favorite takeaways:
Preparing is an act of Caring.

Because a financial plan isn’t only about the assets we manage.
It’s also about the people those assets are meant to care for.

I’m excited to share that I’m now a Certified Money Habitudes Program Practitioner!

Money Habitudes is an interactive, research-based tool that helps people recognize the attitudes & behaviors influencing how they earn, spend, save, give, invest, and talk about money.

And THIS is why I’m excited to bring this into my Community & share with other Teams.

Because you can know the numbers & still avoid the conversation.

You can understand the budget & still second-guess the decision.
You can be incredibly successful & still have money behaviors quietly influencing how you lead, negotiate, price, spend, or respond under financial pressure.

Enjoy helping women get comfortable with uncomfortable money conversations.

Ever had a GREAT idea, but Money Anxiety convinced you to….Wait to launch it.
Or Charge less than you know your work is worth.
Or Turn down an opportunity you were actually ready for.
Or Put off the investment that could help you grow.
Or keep your business smaller than your talent.

We call it being cautious, responsible, or just Waiting for the “right time.”

But what if all that hesitation is actually costing you?

There’s a price we pay when money anxiety starts making our business decisions.

I call it the Innovation Tax.

You pay it in the ideas you never launch, the revenue you never earn, & the opportunities you never pursue.

That’s the conversation I want to bring to SXSW:

What has happened to your relationship with Money when life suddenly changed?

With over 63 million Americans, 1 in 4 adults, currently serving as unpaid caregivers according to a 2025 AARP study, that plan can suddenly feel like it was thrown in the office shredder.

From caregiving, to a divorce, being laid off or an unexpected accident to a child or yourself, not only does our Life change, but also our Money Habitudes. (Yes, Habitude is a real word!)

Webster’s dictionary defines Habitude as a ‘habitual disposition or mode of behavior.’ And hard seasons can drastically change our habitudes in so many areas of our lives, especially our Money.
The saver stops opening her bank statements & the reliable one starts avoiding the mailbox. And for corporate teams, a distracted workforce can be an expensive one.

Money Habitudes matter for women in leadership, who are often expected to hold everyone else steady while their own Habitude is quietly cracking under the weight. It also matters for financial advisors & planners, because a client in crisis will not follow a plan built for a person who no longer exists.

So I am honored to be teaching ‘Beyond Money Habits: The Financial Behaviors That Emerge During Life’s Hard Seasons.’ in the Money Habitudes community where we will use the Habitude lens to equip people to move from crisis behavior back to clarity.

Has your Nerves ever tried to make a financial decision before your brain even has a chance to?
I called that Wealth Anxiety.
A nervous system response that affects our overall well-being.

As a caregiver to a spouse with a blended family of six boys, managing a career, businesses and the weight of all the financial decisions on my shoulders, I use a Wealth Anxiety Reset daily.

And today… Life is showing me is is a perfect day to share it with you!
(As I encountered the unexpected bolt in my tire. 👀)

We are all just ONE ASK away from Discovering what Possible! And because he Asked, my son is now the USATF Regional Gold Medalist in the Triple Jump & 4x USATF Junior Olympic Qualifier.

What makes this even more incredible is he didn’t ask to try something easy. The triple jump is considered one of the most technically demanding events in track & field. It isn’t just one jump, it’s three explosive jumps performed while maintaining speed, rhythm, balance, & power.

So watching my son reminds me that sometimes the biggest obstacle standing between us & a dream isn’t time…
It’s simply the Willingness to Ask, not for what is Easy, but for what seems too difficult to begin.

What if the key to Financial Confidence wasn’t found in a classroom but at the breakfast table?

Since I was 3 years old, my dad has been teaching me about money over breakfast. A tradition we still carry on every Saturday morning.
Not with stress. Not with shame. But with a simple conversation, a napkin sketch, and the wisdom that money should be easy to talk about.
(What He taught is actually a part of my TEDx talk!)

Today, on his birthday, I want to honor the Legacy he’s built, not just in our family, but in the way I teach Financial Education today.

Because of him, I believe:
- Money talks should feel safe, not stressful.
- A simple conversation can shape generations.
- Financial education starts at the table, not just in the classroom.

At 79 years young, his Voice, his wisdom are still shaping lives. And now, I get to share it with the world.

Start with breakfast. Start with a napkin. Start anywhere.
