There is no more lucrative financial move than to have a teenager or young adult open a Roth IRA. Now I know that may be a hard sell. Suggesting someone that young open an investment account for their retirement does sound a bit, well, crazy.

But it is crazy smart. The more time their money has to compound, the more money they will eventually have. And being a teen or young adult is when you can take full advantage of time. That’s not something 30, 40 and 50-somethings can leverage.

If you're 35 and beginning your investment journey, contributing $400 per month in a Roth IRA could get you 522K by 59. And 1 Million by 65. Best part? It's all tax free, which means every cent is yours. That's like having 1.4 Million in a traditional 401k at retirement.

These numbers are compounded if you start at a younger age… but
It's never too late to start!

There are people who make it their full time job to scam the elderly. Some scams are more subtle than others. Last week a friend of mine called me because her mother was being manipulated by a woman who convinced her she was a “friend” and she swore she was “like a daughter to her”. This “friend” wanted her money and jewelry among other things. If the children wouldn’t have stepped in, the mom (who was declining cognitively) would have left everything she had to a drug addicted woman. Very scary.

Over two million elderly people are known to fall victim to elder fraud every year. The elderly population has long been a target of fraud for many reasons. For one, many are trusting and may have decreased cognition stemming from health issues. Scammers are also aware that many of these people have retirement accounts with money to spare—or conversely, are on a budget and likely to jump on a chance at a windfall.

Experts believe, however, that many more elderly victims go unreported. Some may not realize the fraud until a family member or caregiver steps in. Many are embarrassed when they discover they have been duped and so they hide the events. The median amount lost by victims over 80 years old is $1,700.

A great article

Your golden years come with a wealth of discounts and special offers, allowing you to save at your favorite restaurants, grocery stores, and more. Many of these benefits start well before you turn 65, so it's always a good idea to inquire about senior discounts when making a purchase. If a store doesn’t offer a senior discount, be sure to explore any available rewards programs. Here are some discounts you can start enjoying.

Marriott Hotel offers a 10% discount to anyone 62 and older on a stay. Make sure to book your room under the name of the senior guest — most hotels will confirm your age via ID during check-in!

IHOP offers a 55+ Menu, with discounted prices for customers.

Walgreens has Senior Day, the first Tuesday of every month. Customers 55 and up enrolled in the MyWalgreens rewards program can get up to 20% off their purchase, which includes everything from toiletries to snacks.

Kohl's shoppers 60 and up can stop by any location on Wednesdays to get 15% off select brands.

Amtrak offers a 10% discount on most rail fares for passengers 65 and older.

Hertz drivers over 50 can score up to 20% off base rates when renting a car.

Denny's has a discounted 55+ Menu, available whether you dine in or order online.
