𝗔𝗥𝗘 𝗬𝗢𝗨 𝗧𝗨𝗥𝗡𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝟳𝟯 𝗜𝗡 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲?

If so, we need to talk about your retirement accounts.

You may be required to take your first Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) this year, and you have an important decision to make.

𝗗𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗶𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲, 𝗼𝗿 𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗮𝘆 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗥𝗠𝗗 𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗹 𝗔𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗹 𝟭, 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟳?

That decision matters.

If you delay your first RMD until 2027, you could end up taking 𝗧𝗪𝗢 𝘁𝗮𝘅𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗥𝗠𝗗𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟳 because your second RMD would generally still be due by December 31.

So which year is better?

𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗲𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝗬𝗢𝗨𝗥 𝗻𝘂𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿𝘀.

Your expected income, tax bracket, Medicare premiums, state taxes, deductions and even whether you actually need the money can all be part of that decision.

And there are exceptions to the RMD rules, which is another reason not to make the decision based on something you saw online.

If you owe taxes and don't file, penalties may apply, and interest generally begins to accrue on any unpaid tax.

If you're due a refund, there's generally no late-filing penalty. However, you still need to file your return to claim your refund.

⏳ 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗺𝗮𝘆 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗲𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗮𝗻 𝗜𝗥𝗦 𝗻𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲.

If the IRS needs additional information or action from you, they may send you a notice explaining the next steps.

If you still owe taxes, interest continues to accrue, and additional penalties may apply.
