Leap Town Planning Group recently helped the city of Van, Texas adopt a cutting-edge comprehensive plan. This guide to directing the city’s future includes transportation planning being done at the pedestrian level, guaranteeing everyone equal access to places within the community; a band of countryside surrounding the city; and nature areas connected with greenways crossing the city. The plan also provides for a community development and passion identification component in the school curriculum and a focus on human development for all citizens.

There are over 2,800 towns in 12 states with a population between 500 and 5,000 people. Many of those towns will continue to let outside forces determine their future and experience population loss, decreased business activities, and an eroding built environment. Some towns will pursue strategies that are attempts to catch up to a dying past, by making themselves a smaller version of the automobile dominated larger cities. And a very small number will Leap into a directed and determined alternative future of sustainability, resiliency, and transformation. What will your town do?
