🐜 September is when ant calls start climbing across the borderland — and post-monsoon dry-down is what drives it.
At around 4,000 feet in the Chihuahuan Desert, monsoon season officially winds down through September. Colonies that grew all summer suddenly need to feed a much larger population from a shrinking outdoor food supply, and they follow the humidity gradient inward.
Why September pushes ants inside your home:
✅ Post-storm dry-down drops surface moisture and forces colonies to relocate
✅ Irrigated Bermuda lawns and drip lines stay damp when the desert dries out
✅ Slab expansion joints, stucco weep holes, and evaporative cooler drainage all lead ants inside
✅ Colonies emerged from monsoon at peak population with more brood and more workers
The five ant species we see most in borderland homes:
🔍 Red imported fire ant — reddish-brown, small mounds after every storm, sting is medically significant
🔍 Desert fire ant — native paler species, highly active on the surface after monsoon rain
🔍 Carpenter ant — large black, excavates galleries around window frames and porch beams
🔍 Odorous house ant — licorice smell when crushed, trails toward sweets in kitchens
🔍 Pavement ant — nests in driveway and slab cracks, aggressive kitchen forager
Warning signs to check this month:
• Fresh loose-soil mounds along the property line after a monsoon storm
• Trails along baseboards, countertop edges, and window sills
• Sawdust-like frass under window frames or porch posts
• Winged ants inside the home
• Ants in sugar, honey, opened cereal, or pet food
Retail sprays kill the workers they hit but rarely reach the queen — the mound just relocates a few feet and rebuilds within days. Broadcast granular baits and species-specific gel baits available to licensed applicators reach the colony, not just the foragers walking past.
