KGM Architectural Lighting

KGM Architectural Lighting Established in 1985, KGM Architectural Lighting provides lighting design services to a multitude of market sectors worldwide. Spaces are defined by light.

KGM Architectural Lighting is a Los Angeles based architectural lighting design firm with offices in New York and Atlanta. Established in 1985, KGM provides lighting design services to a variety of market sectors worldwide. This is accomplished by completely understanding the architectural concepts and complexities of any given project, evaluating various possible design solutions, and ultimately

developing a lighting scheme that is fully integrated, cost effective and functional. Ongoing collaboration with the team during the design process enables lighting to actually become incorporated into the architecture, adding sophistication and strength to the overall design of the project. Lighting certified, licensed architects, LEED accredited professionals, and members of AIA and IALD comprise the talented individuals of KGM Architectural Lighting. State-of-the-art equipment provides the tools necessary to perform photometric studies, produce renderings of proposed lighting effects and develop documents utilizing the most current AutoCAD, Revit, AGI32, and Adobe software, while providing FTP capabilities. This technical backbone provides our design team the ability to work on local and international projects both creatively and efficiently. Our collaborative approach is an integral process focusing on professionalism and timeliness throughout the design process. With dedication and determination, Dave, Martin and Dan have worked diligently to build KGM into a thriving architectural lighting design firm. There is a fundamental belief that the firm must always improve, do better work, develop and generate an environment which fosters creativity. They have inspired other firms to follow the architectural paradigm by building their practices on the model of an architecture studio. Their ‘team player’ approach and enjoyment of the design process provides an atmosphere conducive to personal and professional growth.

Flashback Friday. A look back at our lighting design for the GM on 5th showroom inside the iconic General Motors Building on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan.

Theatrical, dramatic, and unmistakably New York, this project let us light a stage where some of America’s most recognizable vehicles took center stage. Decades later, we are still doing exactly what we love. Lighting spaces that make people stop and look.

Science Square Labs at is a building built around a single idea — that the best discoveries happen when the right people are in the same room. The lighting was designed to support that idea at every scale.

From the warm glow of the amenity spaces where researchers and innovators gather, to the inviting lobby that draws people in from the street, to the facade that announces the building’s presence on the Atlanta skyline after dark.

A space this committed to connection deserves light that makes every moment of that connection feel worth being present for.

The most expensive lighting mistake has nothing to do with fixtures. It happens before the project even gets to that stage. When lighting is left out of the early design conversation, every decision that follows is working against the space rather than for it.

The result shows up in the budget, in the energy bills, and in every room of the finished building. Getting the lighting designer in the room early is one of the simplest and most impactful decisions a project team can make.

The experience of arriving at a great hotel is one of the most carefully orchestrated sequences in hospitality design. At The Grand LA Conrad Hotel in Downtown Los Angeles, that sequence unfolds across an entire city block of Frank Gehry architecture — and the lighting was developed to make every step of it feel as considered as the building around it.

The warmth at the entry canopy that signals welcome from the street. The continuous step lighting that traces the sweeping curve of the exterior staircase upward. The sculptural pendant fixtures visible through the floor-to-ceiling lobby glass that tell you the arrival sequence is almost complete. Each of those moments was designed to build on the one before it, creating a sense of progression and anticipation that makes reaching the lobby feel like the destination it was always meant to be.

One of the things we are most proud of at KGM is the reach of our work. Over 40 years and across more than 35 countries, the principles we bring to every project have shaped spaces on every corner of the globe.

The Zifeng Tower in Nanchang, China is one of those projects. A striking tower designed by SOM that has become a significant landmark in Jiangxi Province.

The language of good lighting design is universal — and this project is a reminder of how far that language travels.

A residential community is not one space. It is many spaces serving the same people at different moments of their day. The lobby that welcomes you home after a long commute. The lounge where you slow down and connect with neighbors. The fitness center where you push yourself before the day begins. Each of those moments deserves a lighting environment designed specifically for it. At 235 Grand in Jersey City, KGM developed a lighting scheme that responds to each zone of the amenity spaces with its own distinct approach — warm and enveloping where the space calls for comfort, bright and motivating where it calls for energy. Lighting for people means understanding what people need in each moment and designing for all of them.

A restaurant is one of the most emotionally loaded spaces a lighting designer gets to work in. People come to celebrate, to connect, to unwind, to impress. The light in the room shapes all of it before a single dish arrives. At KGM we approach every restaurant and dining space with two things in mind. Honoring the architecture that surrounds the experience, and setting the emotional tone that makes the experience worth having. When both are working together, the room disappears and the evening takes over.

Knowing the truth about lighting changes how you build.

When you understand that quality matters more than quantity, that light shapes how people feel as much as how a space looks, and that the best lighting is always the result of intention rather than default — every decision on a project becomes more focused and more effective. Understanding light is not just useful knowledge. It is a design advantage.

The best architecture in the world is only as good as the light that reveals it. Materials need light to read the way they were chosen to read. Forms need light to have the depth and dimension they were designed to have. Details need light to be noticed at all. Lighting design is not the last step in the design process. It is the step that makes everything before it visible.
