Some seasons are busy because something's wrong.

Others are busy because you finally have the room.

That difference is the whole point.

On October 14, Social Security announced a 3.6% cost-of-living adjustment for 2027, up from 2.8% this year and the largest since 2023. For the average retired worker, that's about $75 more a month starting in January.

Two things decide how much of it you keep. If you're on Medicare, your Part B premium is deducted from your benefit, and the 2027 premium hasn't been announced yet. And the income thresholds that make your benefit taxable have never been adjusted for inflation, so each raise pushes more retirees over them.

Most people never ask their advisor the question that explains the most.

Whether the firm earns more depending on what you end up owning.

At a lot of firms, the answer is yes. Proprietary funds and payments from the companies behind the products can sit behind the advice, and they don't appear on your statement because they aren't billed to you.

None of that makes the advice wrong. But you should know whether it's there.

Every advisory firm has to answer this in plain English in its Form CRS, a short document you can ask any advisor for or look up at investor.gov/CRS. Read the section on conflicts of interest. Ours included.

Most people meet IRMAA by opening a letter.

It's the Medicare surcharge that applies once income crosses a threshold - and it works on a two-year delay. The premium you pay is priced off the return you filed two years earlier.

Two things make that expensive.

It's a cliff, not a slope. Cross by a dollar and the surcharge applies to the whole year, for both spouses.

And the move that pushes you over almost never looks like a Medicare decision. A conversion. A home sale. A first year filing single after losing a spouse.

The year it happens is the only year you can do anything about it.

Medicare doesn't price your premium on what you earn now.

It prices it on the tax return from two years ago.

The premium you pay in 2028 is calculated from the return you file for 2026 - the year you're living right now.

So a Roth conversion this December, a home sale this fall, or a large realized gain can raise a bill you won't see for two years. And by the time it shows up, the year that caused it is closed.

Retail Wall Street manages the portfolio and files the return. Coordinated planning reads them together - before December.

Twenty-five years.

2,977 people went to work that morning and never came home. 343 firefighters and paramedics went up the stairs while everyone else was coming down.

All names are still read aloud at the memorial every year, one at a time, for hours.

We remember them today.

Walk into a big-name firm and you get two things: a recognizable brand holding your money, and an advisor who answers to that brand's product shelf.

The safety is real. So is the conflict.

At the other end, a small independent advisor flips it — unconflicted advice, but you're left wondering who's actually holding the assets.

We built CRA to refuse the tradeoff. Independent advice, so nothing we recommend has a quota behind it. Institutional custody, so your assets sit with a major custodian, never with us.

Objective and safe. That's the structure Retail Wall Street can't match, because their model depends on selling you their own product.

Yes. And it's one of the most expensive surprises in retirement.

You're allowed to delay your very first RMD to April 1 of the year after you reach your RMD age. Sounds harmless.

But do that and two RMDs land in the same tax year: the one you delayed and the one for that year. Your income stacks, and you can jump a bracket.

One timing decision. Thousands in avoidable tax.

Your estate plan was right the day you signed it.

Then the accounts changed. The tax law changed. The family changed. The documents didn't.

Here's what most people never hear: your will doesn't even control your retirement accounts. The beneficiary form does — and if it's outdated, that's who inherits.

Add the SECURE Act's 10-year rule, and an inherited IRA can land on your kids at their highest tax rate.

The Family Estate Organizer® keeps the whole picture current, in one place.
