We all know that 2020 was a year for the history books. But have you looked at the impacts of the pandemic from the perspective of a female employee? What's now being coined "The Great She-Cession" is the result of changes in the work force due to the pandemic.

Let's break this down.

March 2020 comes and the world shuts down. We all begin working from home - what a luxury! Lazy mornings, laptops at the couch, a blouse on top and sweats on the bottom, right? The bliss didn't last long. Especially for women. Schools closed down and parents were asked to homeschool. And work from home. And childcare resources were limited!

So what happened? Women left the workforce. And they're still leaving.

Many women were overburdened and not being properly compensated, nor did they have the resources they needed to be successful. A lot of women lost their employment and struggled to find new positions. I think most women can agree that the cost to return to work did not outweigh the benefits.

Women want to see change in the workforce! Longer maternity leave, flexible schedules, time for vacation just to name a few. Things that have long been ignored were brought to light due to the pandemic. And we want our voices to be heard!

Today we are sharing with you the story of Sissieretta Jones, the first African-American woman to headline a performance at Carnegie Hall in 1893. An American Soprano opera singer and entertainer, also know as The Black Patti.

Not only was a trailblazer for women in the late 1800's, she was also the highest paid black performer of her time.

Sissy began singing at an early age at her father's Baptist church and went on to perform at the White House for President Benjamin Harrison. She later performed for 4 consecutive presidents as well as the British Royal Family.

Sissieretta paved the way for BIPOC female performers who would come after her. She continues to be a source of inspiration to aspiring and long time musicians world wide.

8 years ago I started my adventure as an entrepreneur. I had many opportunities and am grateful to have worked with some of the top brands on the globe. I don’t take any of those experiences for granted as they helped me learn quickly how to develop strategy, know what makes a story newsworthy, oversee some of the top events and be a part of so many magical moments. From celebrity studded red carpets and big events, campaigns, travel and everything in between.

After nearly 10 years and with extreme corporate burnout, I thought there has to be a better way to work and do business. In the Fall of 2015, Heart & Soul PR was born from my now home office in Redondo Beach. I got scrappy, I built my own website, pitched my butt off, and networked room after room, forum after forum.

To date, we have helped serve more than 20+ clients delivering billions of impressions, top-tier partnerships, strategy, content and more in a range of industries in various stages of their business including health and wellness, fashion, beauty, food & beverage, music, film, art, books, CPG, CBD, and more. It continues to be a great pleasure to bring the humanity back to business and put my heart and soul into my clients business.
