Ever wonder what goes into keeping our fiber network connected?
These photos highlight one of the most precise parts of the job: fiber splicing. The strands of fiber being joined together are incredibly thin, about the width of a human hair, and require a steady hand, patience, and specialized equipment to prepare and align them correctly.
In the first photo, the protective coating is carefully stripped from the fiber strands. The second photo shows the fibers being cleaved, which means they’re cut perfectly straight to create a clean end face. In this case, all 12 fibers in the ribbon are cleaved at the same time. The third photo features a fusion splicer, which precisely aligns and permanently fuses all 12 fibers together at once creating one continuous piece of fiber.
It’s detailed work, but it’s an important step in delivering the fast, reliable fiber internet our communities count on every day.
