At around 1740 hrs on 02/03/2024 Director Yanez was working on assigned post near 600 Congress. While conducting routine patrols, Director Yanez noticed individual who was near property that appeared at first to be sleeping. Upon further investigation, the individual was unresponsive and appeared to be unconscious and not breathing. Director Yanez then around 1745 contacted Emergency Services. Police from Austin Police Department responded with Austin-Travis county Fire/EMS. First responders determined the individual to be deceased at around 1755 hrs. Once individual was determined by medical professionals to be deceased, Director Yanez assisted Police in securing the crime scene/crowd control. Homicide detectives was then notified. While the scene was being secured by additional Officers on the scene Director Yanez and Primary Peace Officer worked with building security Priebe Security Services to help determine cause and time of death. The time of Death was approximately around 1455 hrs on the same day of incident. Once additional details was collected Homicide Detective arrived on scene at around 1830 hrs. Homicide Detective collected information from all other parties and with and further investigation in collecting evidence and observing CCTV footage the cause of death determined to be an overdose. Around 1840 hrs Medical examiners then arrived on scene to take custody of individual. While Medical Examiners and Homicide was on scene a protest across the street broke out near by the crime scene. Fortunately, Other Officers from Austin Police Department were already there responding to it. Indivduals identity was yet to be determined out on scene. Nothing follows.
