Sometimes in our rush to create programming in our parishes, we fail to lay the foundation for our processes and events to bear evangelistic fruit. I created a simple checklist for Missionary Leadership Academy members to use when planning a process or event.

This checklist helps them remember deep principles that insure "programming" at the parish and diocesan level can bear fruit in terms of sharing Jesus and the Gospel Message.

What other steps would you include on your checklist?

When it comes to the renewal and transformation of parishes, leaders must have a laser-like focus on changing culture. In order to do that, the whole leadership team must have a deep commitment and understanding of the new culture they want to create.

This should manifest as a common mindset. I know that mindset sounds like a buzzword from the self-actualization world, but it is a useful concept to understand in light of parish renewal.

Mindset can be defined as: A set of beliefs that shape how you make sense of the world and yourself. It influences how you think, feel, and behave in any given situation.

Mindset is a kind of interior culture, if you will. And it produces thoughts that can be fruitful for parish renewal or detrimental to parish renewal. These thoughts can lead to incredible breakthroughs or send a parish down a rabbit hole, or worse, a dead end.

I recently created a comparison list of Thoughts That Renew Parishes and Thoughts That Keep Parishes Stuck for the Missionary Leadership Academy. I wanted to share that with a wider audience.

What kind of thoughts seem to dominate your parish leadership?

And what helpful or harmful thoughts would you add to this list?

I'm curious.

I created a quick comparison list of Frustrated vs Fruitful Evangelizers for the Missionary Leadership Academy. I wanted to share.

Frustrated evangelizers don't often see "fruit (i.e., people moving closer to a relationship with Jesus or beginning that relationship), while fruitful evangelizers do.

Although this list is not complete, those of us who are passionate about parish renewal, mission, and evangelization, should take note of the principles for fruitful evangelization.

I spent many, many years as a frustrated evangelizer.

It's time for a change.

I'M CURIOUS, WHAT BULLET POINTS WOULD YOU PLACE UNDER THE FRUSTRATED AND FRUITFUL COLUMNS?

For the past 15 years, I have worked with pastoral leaders all across North America in both parish and diocesan positions. One of the largest obstacles to renewal in those contexts lies in the hearts of these leaders. Parish renewal requires both personal and pastoral conversion.

The habits that made us "successful" or allowed us to function well in maintenance environments generally do not have the same effect when transitioning to mission. And let's be honest here--a lot of our leadership approaches, style, and structures have not served us well in maintenance either.

If we want transformation, we must therefore be willing to let go of how we have led in the past and embrace new approaches and structures. This is challenging in an ecclesial context where the lack of change (in our theology, teaching, and devotional life) is seen as a feature and not a bug.

Nevertheless, if we are not willing to move out of our comfort zone, embrace a new approach, and lead differently for the sake of our people and our mission, we must confront the fact that we don't truly want to lead--we simply want to be in charge!

Down that way lies a series of endless retrenchments, until the influence and ability of the parish to transform the local community in which it is placed fades into oblivion.

Parish renewal doesn't require complex strategies or massive budgets. But it does require both personal and pastoral conversion--a different approach to how we see, execute, and evaluate ministry and parish life.

One of the most critical areas of change we need to see in parish and diocesan life is the creation of a culture of accountability in leadership. Many parishes are mildly to moderately dysfunctional, some to the point of toxicity, because they do not have healthy leadership, clear communication, and a culture where both volunteers, paid staff, and clergy are held accountable.

In this brief video, Deacon Keith explores the necessity of accountability and what that can mean for parishes and dioceses.

If we want our parishes to experience renewal, our leaders must demonstrate particular qualities. Deacon Keith discusses why the most important quality for leaders is that they must be disciples themselves!
