Beef takes time.

The graphic says about two years, and that's true for the beef animal itself. But the story actually starts even earlier.

Before a calf is born, its mother carries it for about nine months. Long before that, farmers are making decisions about genetics, nutrition, breeding, pasture, and herd health that help shape the next generation.

So while a beef animal spends about two years growing, producing beef is really a process measured in years—not months.

Every steak, roast, and burger represents years of planning, daily care, and stewardship by farm families.

Getting to know the farming behind the apples. 🍎

Our Young Farmers gathered at Orchard Landing in Hanover Sunday evening for a tour and meeting. It was a chance to learn about a farm bureau's operation and catch up with one another.

Visits like this give us a closer look at the different kinds of agriculture here in Jo Daviess County and the people who make it happen.

Thank you to our hosts at Orchard Landing & Galena Cider Co. for showing us around and sharing your time and knowledge!

Before the butter and salt, there’s a farmer. 🌽

As Galena 2026 gathers for tomorrow’s Bicentennial Corn Boil, we’re giving a little recognition to where it all begins—with someone planting, tending, and harvesting the food we enjoy.

Here in Jo Daviess County, agriculture is part of our everyday lives. It’s our neighbors, our family businesses, and the work happening down the road.

A community celebration built around sweet corn is a pretty fitting reminder of that connection. Here’s to the farmers who grow it and the neighbors who gather around it.

Thank you to the organizers and volunteers behind Galena’s Bicentennial Corn Boil for bringing our community together! 🌽
