Early control flight aviation, must start with the story about John Montgomery, born in 1858, in Yuba City California. As a young boy he would see birds in flight, along the Sutter Buttes, and wonder one day if he too could fly. John Montgomery worked 25 years and wrote a manuscript called Soaring Flight. He gave a copy of this manuscript to Octave Chanute describing the parabolic wing used to create left. John went on to become professor Montgomery at Santa Clara college in California he continued his experiments in flight building a tandem wing aero plane called the Santa Clara. On April 29, 1905 professor Montgomery demonstrated the flight of the Santa Clara launched by a hot air balloon at the altitude of 4000 feet. Guided by the aeronaut Daniel Maloney the Santa Clara landed safely.
