As we wrap up MMIP Awareness Month, we reflect on the importance of raising awareness, helping families, and continuing the work needed to bring our people home.

Last week, Tribal Council Members Kevin Singh, Jay Williams, and Annette Williams attended the Elk Grove City Council meeting to accept a resolution proclaiming May as Missing and Murdered Indigenous Persons (MMIP) Awareness Month.

We thank the City of Elk Grove for recognizing this critical issue and helping elevate awareness throughout our community. While MMIP Awareness Month may be ending, our commitment to advocacy, education, and action continues year-round. ❤️

A new chapter is officially underway at Sky River!

On April 27, Wilton Rancheria celebrated the groundbreaking of our highly anticipated 300-room hotel tower, a major milestone in the continued evolution of Sky River into a premier resort destination for the Sacramento region. The expansion will bring new entertainment and event space, additional dining experiences, a luxury spa and pool, and hundreds of new jobs to our community.

More importantly, it reflects Wilton Rancheria’s continued investment in long-term opportunity, economic self-sufficiency, and a future that benefits both Tribal citizens and the broader region.

Our Traditional Ecological Knowledge team will present “From the Sky to the Earth: Wilton Rancheria’s Cultural Connection with Birds”.

This MMIP Week was a reminder that it takes all of us, Tribal leaders, law enforcement, advocates, legislators, families, and communities to come together and push for something better.

We started the week by co-hosting an MMIP Investigations Training with the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office, bringing together more than 100 registrants from over 17 counties to strengthen collaboration and improve responses to MMIP cases.

From there, we joined Tribal leaders and legislators from across California for important conversations about partnership, sovereignty, and public safety at the Tribal Leaders Reception. On Wednesday morning, Vice Chair Williams also delivered opening remarks at the MMIP press conference at the State Capitol.

Later that day, Spokesperson Singh and Councilmembers Annette Williams and Antonio Ruiz, joined Chairman Tarango at the California Native American Monument in Capitol Park to expand our first-of-its-kind Regional MMIP Task Force, adding new federal, Tribal, and local partners committed to this work.

That evening, we gathered at the Candlelight Vigil on the West Steps of the Capitol to honor those still missing, those taken too soon, and the families still waiting to bring their loved ones home. Vice Chair Williams emceed the night alongside Chairwoman Dutschke and Chairwoman Pinto & our ICWA team was there to provide resources and support for hundreds of attendees.

We closed the week at the State Capitol, where Chairman Tarango and Vice Chair Williams joined Tribal leaders on the Assembly Floor during the presentation of the resolution proclaiming May as MMIP Awareness Month.

Still thinking about our incredible Cap to Cap trip to Washington D.C. with the Sacramento Metro Chamber for our third year in a row!

Grateful for the conversations, the connections, and the opportunity to advocate for our region alongside so many passionate leaders. While in D.C., our leadership met with the Department of the Interior and other federal partners to continue advancing priorities important to our community and our Tribe.

Happy to be home—but the work continues.

Check out our social media interns of the day at Lo:ye:ma:non! We celebrated the new year on March 30th, welcoming in the new spring time. And what happened that day was something you feel in your chest. From good nupa to smiles, it was a day that reminded us of everything we are. The sound of our language being sung and spoken. Bodies moving in dance. Floral crowns made by our own hands. Smiles that said everything words could not. This is why we gather. This is why we protect what was given to us.

Our youth showed up in a powerful way — making floral crowns, stepping into the role of social media interns, and documenting every moment on a disposable camera. Yes, that is why it took so long to post. And it was worth every second of the wait.

To every person who cooked, helped, showed up, and poured themselves into this day — we see you and we thank you from the bottom of our hearts. To our youth — you are the reason we keep going. You are the living proof that our culture is not fading. It is thriving.

Happy New Year!

This Earth Day, we’re shining a light on simple ways to protect our home!

Litter is one of the biggest issues facing our communities, and the effects are bigger than you might think:

🌱 Plastics release toxic chemicals into soil and water
🦊 Wildlife can become entangled or ingest waste
🐠 Pollution threatens aquatic life and food safety
🌧️ Communities with more litter see higher rates of stress, anxiety, and depression
🌳 Access to clean, green spaces is linked to better long-term mental health

How you can help...
Start with yourself
🌟 Pack it in, pack it out
🌟 Leave no trace

Show up for your community
🌟 Join a cleanup
🌟 Help keep shared spaces clean

Think bigger
🌟 Reduce single-use plastics
🌟 Support long-term solutions that protect our land and water

Zero litter is the goal. Let’s work together to leave it better for generations to come!
