As we step forward into a new year our hearts are a little heavier with the loss of one of our founding owners. Bob and Ruth built a local family owned business in the Elkader community that has lasted for 78 years!
Together they built that business on simple principles; honesty, integrity, quality products and long term relationships.
We at Grau logs and lumber are committed to honoring those core values now and into the future. We will miss Ruth’s years of support and commitment to our business and the community, but most of all we will miss our grandma Ruth.

Ruth Button Grau, 93 of Elkader, Iowa passed away Monday, December 29, 2025 at MercyOne Hospital in Elkader, Iowa.

Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 am with a visitation from 9:00 am until 11:00 am on Friday, January 2, 2026 at Peace United Church of Christ in Elkader, Iowa with Rev. Paula Anderson as the officiant.

Inurnment will be held at a later date in East Side Cemetery in Elkader, Iowa.

Yesterday, TUDARE and Iowa DNR picked up lumber to build next weekend, at the Manchester Fish Hatchery! A huge thank you to Grau Logs & Lumber for covering a portion of the material cost.

Great resource for trees! We use the state nursery for tree planting every year and love the results. “The best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago, the second best time is now”

80 cents for a tree? That's not bad. Not bad at all. 🌳 Seedlings from the DNR's State Forest Nursery are back on sale!

Seedlings can be ordered Sept. 3 - May 30. The bare-root seedlings are packaged in bundles of 25 inside sealed and labeled plastic bags.

Tree varieties include 23 species of native hardwoods, eight evergreen species and 15 smaller trees and shrubs. Prices range from $.80 to $1.20 per seedling. Seedlings are sold in three age classifications, and range in size from 10-30 inches depending on the species.
