There is a difference between managing behavior and nurturing human development.

As I prepare to join fellow childcare professionals, educators, advocates, and change makers this week, I've been reflecting on this message.

This image isn't really about technology.
It's about what happens when we unintentionally value compliance over connection, productivity over presence, and performance over emotional development.
Children don't just need information. They need relationships

They need adults who are curious before they're corrective.

Adults who understand that behavior is communication.

Adults who recognize that emotional regulation, belonging, identity, and safety are not "extras"—they are the foundation for learning.

From a mental health and social justice lens, we also have to ask ourselves:

• Who gets labeled "defiant" instead of "distressed?"

• Which children are expected to adapt to systems that were never designed with them in mind?

• How do we create environments where every child feels seen before they are evaluated?

Social and emotional wellness isn't another initiative to add to our plates.

It's the lens through which every interaction should be viewed

As I head into this conference, I'm looking forward to conversations with fellow change makers about building spaces where children can wonder, play, question, regulate, heal, and belong.

Because when we care for the whole child, we change the future.

There is something powerful about what happens after the curtain closes

One of the greatest honors of my work is partnering with The Collective Mic to facilitate post-performance talkback conversations—creating space where audiences can process, reflect, and begin conversations that often remain unspoken.

Art has a way of bringing hidden emotions to the surface. A performance may entertain us, but it can also awaken memories, questions, grief, courage, and hope.

During these conversations, audience members have bravely shared truths they have carried in silence for years.

❤️ Together we are reminded that healing doesn't only happen on the stage—it happens in the conversations that follow.

I also believe it is important to care for the performers who bring these stories to life. Carrying emotionally heavy narratives deserves space to pause, breathe, decompress, and reset. Their wellness matters, too.

Whether in a theater, a therapy office, a classroom, or a community gathering, I believe SAFE and BRAVE spaces can exist anywhere when people are met with compassion, respect, and without judgment.

For me, this work has always been about helping people rediscover their voice. Because silence often keeps pain hidden.

Conversation creates the possibility for healing. Sometimes healing doesn't begin with an answer. It begins with finally having permission to NAME what happened.

Thank you to The Collective Mic for continuing to create meaningful art that invites courageous conversations and reminds us that healing is possible.
