Small equipment still plays a big role

In most abandoned mines, many of the historic workings were driven only as wide as they had to be. So when it comes time to reopen these historic drifts, it often doesn’t make sense to use what might be considered industry “standard” equipment underground. Of all the miners you know, who’s the best at painting up a face? If you ask us, we’ve got a long list of crew members that deserve that top spot.

What makes painting up a face like this so impressive is the combination of art, science, and gut instinct that goes into the results. And at the end of the day, it’s the experience of a miner that makes or breaks a blast pattern. Sure a theoretical blast pattern can be optimized on a computer, but until you lay eyes on a face, there’s no way to know if that pattern design will truly hold up. Being able to factor in all the characteristics of the face - from the rock type to the joint sets to the previous blast just mucked out - has to be done effectively to custom fit each blast to the face it’s being drilled in.
