Dawn Popp, Local Childcare Consultant, Cultural Care Au Pair Choosing childcare is no easy decision. Hosting a Cultural Care au pair gives thousands of families across the country those very important benefits.

I provide year-round support to host families and au pairs, and also talk to families considering the program to help them determine if Cultural Care Au Pair is the right childcare solution for them. Because as parents, we don’t ever want to compromise on quality, flexibility and trust when finding care for the most important people in the world. I invite you to learn more about who our au pairs a

re, what they do, and why more families than ever are joining our program. For over 25 years, Cultural Care Au Pair has helped host families across the country secure childcare that provides flexibility, trust and cultural exchange. Our families love welcoming au pairs year after year. Cultural Care au pairs are carefully screened young adults from over 25 countries worldwide who have childcare experience, CPR and First Aid certification and an interest in joining an American family for a year. FLEXIBILITY
An au pair can provide up to 45 hours per week of childcare (up to 10 hours per day) on a schedule you decide, including early morning, evening and weekend coverage. Au pairs can also care for your children when they are sick, out from school on snow days and during school vacations. Families with busy schedules love hosting au pairs! TRUST
Because an au pair lives with you as a member of your family, your relationship with her develops quickly and mutual trust happens much faster than with a daycare provider or live-out nanny. After an initial period of adjustment, our host parents describe feeling a deep sense of comfort knowing their children are cared for by someone they know and respect. CULTURE
Au pairs come from many countries all over the world and can expose your entire family to their language and culture. Your children will learn words in your au pair’s native tongue and well as songs and games from her home country. Au pairs also help children gain a renewed appreciation for their own environment and a desire to see more of the world. PROTECTION
Cultural Care Au Pair is a government-regulated program, meaning there are guidelines in place designed to protect both families and au pairs during the exchange year. It also means that au pairs travel to the U.S. on a legal J-1 visa, allowing them to stay in the country (and with your family) for up to two years.

September 5 is the "International Day of Charity," so it seemed like a perfect opportunity to spotlight the Cultural Care Kids First Foundation! Thanks to the support of our global community of host families, LCCs, au pairs, and Cultural Care staff and friends in the U.S. and abroad, the Kids First Foundation provides grants to help children in need around the world, with a focus on the countries where we recruit our au pairs. Donations to the Kids First Foundation are matched 100% by Cultural Care Au Pair. Together, we're making a difference—one project, one fundraiser, one bright future at a time.

To me, one of the very best parts of the au pair program is the LIFELONG relationships that can form between families and au pairs. I will be forever grateful for the amazing big sisters/mentors/role models my kids continue to have in our former au pairs.

I love seeing all of the inspiring and accomplished young women that Cultural Care featured for International Women's Day. One of the things I loved about the au pair program for my family was the fact that it gave my kids such amazing LIFELONG mentors and role models!

“This July will be 7 years since I started my au pair journey. I was fortunate enough to take care of four amazing children, and I am still in contact with my host family! I am currently a part-time PR manager to a gallery artist in Cape Town as well as a certified Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) teacher while completing my degree in Communications at UNISA.

During my time as an au pair, I learned to be patient and to be more attentive to my work. I have learned that if you ask you will be helped, and that plays a big role in my everyday life. I am also very grateful for the friends that I made during my time as an au pair—we all came from different backgrounds, and we all clicked as a whole. I am and will always be grateful to the Levy family for allowing me to be a part of their family. Being an au pair is great but being a part of the family is even more amazing!” —Chandry, former au pair from South Africa

Welcoming your new au pair is truly a magical moment! I love this video from the Carter-Jackson family about how they welcomed their 5th au pair, Sarah from South Africa, to their family!

Hosting an au pair is not only an incredible childcare option, but a unique cultural exchange experience - it was truly life-changing for my family, and I love sharing it with other families! If you’re interested in more information about this wonderful program, I’d love to tell you more about it. Comment below or visit my webpage to get started! www.culturalcare.com/dpopp

That first meeting is always so exciting (and a bit scary)! A homemade (especially kid-made) sign is a fantastic way to start things off on the right foot. I also recommend having a small gift bag or basket waiting in the au pair's new room, with a few small items to help her feel at home. (A starter set of shampoo/conditioner, maybe a picture frame or a small stuffed animal, a mug or t-shirt featuring your state, city, or local sports team, etc.)
