National Electrical Safety Month – Stay Powered Safely!
May is National Electrical Safety Month, led by the Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI), a nonprofit dedicated to reducing electrically related fires, injuries, and fatalities at home and on the job.
This year, take a moment to focus on something many of us use every day—but often overlook: extension cords.
Did you know? Roughly 3,300 home fires each year originate from extension cords due to improper use. Here are a few simple but critical safety reminders:
✔️ Use extension cords only as a temporary solution—not permanent wiring
✔️ Never “daisy chain” cords together (plugging one into another)
✔️ Match the cord to the job—indoor vs. outdoor rated matters
✔️ Inspect before use—discard damaged or frayed cords
✔️ Never remove the grounding pin to force a plug into an outlet
✔️ Always use GFCI protection outdoors
✔️ If you rely heavily on extension cords, it may be time to install additional outlets
Electrical safety starts with awareness and small, smart choices.
Let’s work together to keep our jobsites and our homes safe this month and beyond.
