These aggressive wasps build their nests from a paper-mâché-like material by mixing saliva with chewed wood fiber (and sometimes drywall).
Colony size: Nests hidden in structural walls can explode during summer, housing 5,000+ workers by late season.
Common culprit: The German yellow jacket (Vespula germanica) loves enclosed spaces like wall voids, attics, and crawlspaces.
The “breakthrough” risk: As the colony grows crowded in late summer, they may chew straight through sheetrock or ceilings and pour into your living space.
