In the days, weeks and months that followed the September 11th terrorist attacks, we, as a nation, struggled to understand the tremendous loss of life in New York City and Pennsylvania and at the Pentagon - and we were united in our grief. However, if someone you love died that day, your grief was acute and intense, and likely still is as you reflect on that day and the years that have followed without your loved one. Know that your loved one is not forgotten, and the nation continues to grieve by your side. Who are you remembering today?

As we acknowledge the 20th anniversary of that tragic day, Remembering A Life would like to honor the many personal experiences and memories that have been part of our collective grief journey, as a nation, over the past two decades. Whether you lost a loved one that day, were a first responder, or are simply reflecting on your thoughts and emotions twenty years later, please consider sharing your story with us, either through the written word or a video recording. Stories will be shared on the Remembering A Life website and on social media (and you’ll only be identified by your first name, city and state). Please know that your story will be received with care and compassion.

Every person who submits a story (written or video) will receive a Remembering A Life Grief Journal.

(Unsure about sharing a video story? Don’t worry, it’s easy. Plus, you can record it as many times as you like until it’s just right.)

Where were you the morning of September 11, 2001? Most of us who are old enough to remember the terrorist attacks that morning also remember exactly where we were and what we were doing when we heard the news that one plane, and then another, had hit the World Trade Center, followed by two more in Pennsylvania and at the Pentagon. Many of us were going about our normal morning routine – having breakfast, getting children ready for school or heading off to work right before we learned of the attacks that would change our lives.

Now, as we acknowledge the 20th anniversary of that tragic day, Remembering A Life would like to honor the many personal experiences and memories that have been part of our collective grief journey, as a nation, over the past two decades. In the days, months and years following the September 11 terrorist attacks, scores of funeral professionals from across the country traveled to New York City, volunteering their time to assist in recovery efforts, contact families, identify remains and help grieving families plan services for their loved ones. For many, this meant traveling a great distance and leaving their own families behind to help other families who were grieving unfathomable loss. Their stories, for the most part, have gone untold over the past two decades.

Now, 20 years later, four funeral directors share the stories in this powerful episode: https://www.rememberingalife.com/podcast/20-years-later-how-funeral-directors-helped-families-heal-after-911

"If there is ever a time to remember the importance of self-care, it’s during your grief journey. As a therapist specializing in grief and a person who has experienced loss, I firmly believe that it is crucial to care for ourselves as we heal from the death of a loved one. Learning how to lean into the practices that carry me through my own grief has provided a vital source for healing – something we all have a right to. Self-care, however, can feel like a nebulous buzzword and even if we believe that it’s beneficial to engage in, it can be confusing to know where to begin."

Alex Mammadyarov (on Instagram ), a writer and psychotherapist specializing in grief, shares how the items in the Remembering A Life Self-care Box can help individuals and families regardless of where they are on their grief journeys.
