Fall migration can change bird pressure quickly. Properties that had relatively little activity during summer may suddenly become resting, feeding, or staging areas for migrating birds.
At the same time, resident birds are adjusting to cooler temperatures and changing food availability. For bird control operators, this makes October a valuable time for a detailed site survey. Start by identifying the species involved and documenting where birds are landing, feeding, drinking, roosting, or entering structures. Look beyond the most obvious accumulation of droppings—the actual attractant may be elsewhere on the property. Pay particular attention to ledges, signs, rooflines, open eaves, vents, loading areas, standing water, waste-handling areas, landscaping, and other potential food or shelter sources.
Identifying these conditions helps determine whether the site requires exclusion, perch deterrence, sensory deterrence, sanitation improvements, or a combination of approaches. A good fall inspection isn't only about solving today's bird problem. It can reveal where birds are likely to settle as temperatures continue to drop, giving operators an opportunity to address vulnerabilities before winter roosting becomes established.
