Have you ever wondered what happens after we’re done with an exploration site?

We’re committed to operating responsibly at every stage of our project, and our exploration drilling programs are designed to be as low impact as possible and leave very few traces behind.

Once we’re done pulling core samples from a drill hole, we seal it off completely with cement to prevent voids from forming and surface water from interacting with groundwater. This sealing process is regulated by the Minnesota Department of Health. The machine used to pump cement into the hole can be seen at the top left of the image below. As the cement is pumped, groundwater is pushed out of the hole (photo at top right) and recycled through the machine to make more cement. Any leftover water is captured and taken off site for treatment. Next, the casing is pulled (bottom left photo) and the hole is sealed. Finally, the site is reclaimed with soil and vegetation (bottom right).

For James Devine, our Community and Operations Manager, Ely is home. It’s a place where he can go to the grocery store to pick up just a few items and leave almost an hour later because he ran into so many familiar faces who want to stop and chat.

“The small-town living is what sets Ely apart,” he said. “There’s a real sense of community here, and you feel connected to your friends and neighbors every day.”

James is also an avid outdoorsman and deeply values living in a place where the wilderness is always close. He encourages visitors to visit this fall and experience the area’s natural beauty and opportunities for outdoor recreation.

“If you drive the Echo Trail from Ely to Crane Lake, you’ll see amazing fall colors. If you’re a hunter, it’s a good spot for grouse. Or just enjoy the views of the leaves, cliffs, and streams.”

You might think of platinum in your jewelry, or inside your catalytic converter. But did you know this precious metal might be hiding on your kitchen shelves? If you have silicone bakeware, platinum could be within your reach.

There aren’t pieces of metallic platinum in your silicone pie dish or muffin pan, but the process used to make them depends on it. Tiny amounts of platinum are used as a catalyst (a substance that helps a chemical reaction happen) during the curing process that turns silicone into the flexible, durable material used for bakeware. It’s especially good at catalyzing the reaction that “knits” silicone together without the odor- or flavor-affecting byproducts created by other curing methods, which makes platinum-cured silicone a good match for food contact.

This is just one way that the minerals we’ll responsibly mine at Twin Metals show up in unexpected places in everyday life. Stay tuned for more!

In many ways, Luke Mariuzza’s geology internship with Twin Metals was like coming home.

“I’m from the U.P., so Ely feels a lot like my hometown,” he said. “I also spent some time at Eagle Mine when I was a student at Michigan Tech, working with the underground maintenance crew and in the processing mill. Mining has always been interesting to me, and I wanted to keep learning.”

When Luke graduated with a degree in Geological Engineering last December, he knew he wanted to get back in the field. This summer, he helped with our drill program and got hands-on experience with the research that helps our geologists understand our resource and where to explore next. He also wants to encourage more young people to go into mining.

“Mining isn’t like what you see in old Westerns anymore,” he said. “It’s really high-tech, and so much goes into making sure we can get the metals we need for the future in a responsible way that’s safe for workers and the environment.”

And speaking of the future... Luke has officially joined the team as our Project Controls Coordinator. Congratulations, Luke, we’re glad to have you on the crew!

Mining and tourism both go back a long way in our hometown of Ely, Minnesota. And when it comes to building our community’s future, there’s no need to choose between one or the other. A new generation of mining, with modern technologies and environmental safeguards, will provide critical year-round jobs to keep hotels, restaurants, and other small businesses thriving in Ely and across northeast Minnesota.

To see this in action, let’s look across Lake Superior to Marquette, Michigan. This area is home to Eagle Mine, currently our nation’s only primary nickel producer. It’s also a place that draws tourists from all over the country for sport fishing, hiking, and other outdoor adventures.

Our project turns “Sweet 16” this month! Since our start on July 19, 2010, we’ve been getting to know our community here in Ely, Minnesota and supporting the events and organizations that make this such a great place to call home. Over the past 16 years, we’ve given back to our community with over $850,000 in donations, and this is just the beginning! We look forward to growing our investment in Ely as we build out our project in the years to come.
