In many ways, Luke Mariuzza’s geology internship with Twin Metals was like coming home.

“I’m from the U.P., so Ely feels a lot like my hometown,” he said. “I also spent some time at Eagle Mine when I was a student at Michigan Tech, working with the underground maintenance crew and in the processing mill. Mining has always been interesting to me, and I wanted to keep learning.”

When Luke graduated with a degree in Geological Engineering last December, he knew he wanted to get back in the field. This summer, he helped with our drill program and got hands-on experience with the research that helps our geologists understand our resource and where to explore next. He also wants to encourage more young people to go into mining.

“Mining isn’t like what you see in old Westerns anymore,” he said. “It’s really high-tech, and so much goes into making sure we can get the metals we need for the future in a responsible way that’s safe for workers and the environment.”

And speaking of the future... Luke has officially joined the team as our Project Controls Coordinator. Congratulations, Luke, we’re glad to have you on the crew!

Mining and tourism both go back a long way in our hometown of Ely, Minnesota. And when it comes to building our community’s future, there’s no need to choose between one or the other. A new generation of mining, with modern technologies and environmental safeguards, will provide critical year-round jobs to keep hotels, restaurants, and other small businesses thriving in Ely and across northeast Minnesota.

To see this in action, let’s look across Lake Superior to Marquette, Michigan. This area is home to Eagle Mine, currently our nation’s only primary nickel producer. It’s also a place that draws tourists from all over the country for sport fishing, hiking, and other outdoor adventures.

Our project turns “Sweet 16” this month! Since our start on July 19, 2010, we’ve been getting to know our community here in Ely, Minnesota and supporting the events and organizations that make this such a great place to call home. Over the past 16 years, we’ve given back to our community with over $850,000 in donations, and this is just the beginning! We look forward to growing our investment in Ely as we build out our project in the years to come.

We share your concerns about acid rock drainage (ARD), a serious environmental issue that can develop when sulfide-containing rocks aren’t handled with care. That’s why we’ve designed our project to eliminate sources of ARD and prevent it from forming in the first place:

1. No waste rock piles: The size and shape of our orebody (the rock that contains the critical minerals) means we can extract it in a highly targeted, “surgical” way that keeps all waste rock underground where it can’t be exposed to the weathering that triggers ARD.

2. No acid-generating tailings: The sulfide in our orebody is directly associated with the copper, nickel, and platinum group metals, which means it will be removed during processing. Tailings (the sandy material left over) will be non-acid generating and stored in an environmentally safe “dry stack” that eliminates the need for a conventional pond or dam.

Hearing questions about whether Minnesota’s environmental laws are strong enough to protect the Boundary Waters? After considering over 4,000 public comments, expert testimony, and review by a judge, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) decided that current mining rules hold up when it comes to preventing harm to the Boundary Waters and its watershed.

Northern Minnesota deserves facts, not fear-driven narratives.

A recent Minnesota DNR ruling reaffirmed what many in our region already know: Minnesota’s environmental review and permitting process is among the most rigorous in the nation, and existing rules are designed to protect the Boundary Waters.

Mining projects in our state still face extensive environmental review, tribal consultation, public input, and science-based permitting standards. That hasn’t changed.

What this ruling does show is that Northern Minnesota workers and communities deserve a process rooted in science, fairness, and facts - not misinformation and endless delay.

The Twin Metals team was delighted to host third graders from Ely Public School District 696 today at our facilities in Ely! We enjoyed spending time with these enthusiastic learners and showing them all about the minerals that are underneath the ground in northern Minnesota.
