Amato Architecture Providing architectural design services for residential, commercial and restaurant properties

For over 20 years, Rebecca Amato has applied her extensive design experience and creative thinking and problem solving skills to a wide variety of projects, from simple home remodels to new restaurant designs, from small office interiors to entire commercial building upgrades. Rebecca’s work history encompasses hospitality and hotel design, commercial interior design, and residential and retail projects throughout the Bay Area, as well as in Los Angeles, Colorado, Hawaii, Thailand, Hong Kong and China. Before founding her own company in 2001, Rebecca has held positions as lead architect and project manager for large international architectural firms, design-build offices, and small boutique design firms, giving her extensive experience with construction document preparation, materials selection, lighting specification, plumbing fixture and equipment selection, engineering and technology coordination, contractor relations, budget review and job site management.

Warm woods, cozy corners, and room for every generation. This Berkeley Craftsman was refreshed to support a family as it grows and changes, creating a home where grandparents, parents, and children can each have their own space while still feeling connected.

A more efficient layout allowed us to create a new primary suite upstairs, and a private guest suite downstairs for the grandparents, without changing the square footage. The expanded kitchen and walk-in pantry strengthen the heart of the home, while comfortable living spaces invite everyone to slow down and spend time together. Rich wood tones, quartzite, and custom glass complement the home’s original Craftsman character and create a welcoming backdrop for generations to come.

We’re thrilled to share that our Napa Valley home remodel is featured in the October issue of Marin Magazine!

Built by the clients’ parents in the 1960s, the home held deep family history and a strong sense of place. The goal was to update it for modern living while preserving the character and spirit of the original.

A reconfigured floor plan, raised ceilings, and thoughtfully updated spaces bring new life to the home, while structural improvements strengthen its resilience against wildfires and earthquakes. This 1936 Storybook home in the North Berkeley Hills was transformed with a careful balance of preservation and thoughtful expansion. The street-facing character remains intact, while the back of the house opens to sweeping canyon and Bay views through a new kitchen, connected living spaces, deck, and primary suite.

Authentic materials—including old-growth redwood, wide-plank oak, and locally forged iron—help the additions feel original to the home.

We’re honored that the project received the 2024 Berkeley Architectural Heritage Association Preservation Award for Addition and Restoration.

For more than twenty years, Amato Architecture has been working with the diverse architectural fabric of the East Bay. From high-peaked Colonial Revivals to Tudor Revivals, Arts and Crafts homes, and everything in between, each project begins with an understanding of what makes a home (and its architectural style) unique.

Our approach is never one-size-fits-all. We look closely at the original character, proportions, materials, and details of each home to create renovations that honor the past while making space for modern life.

After two decades and countless homes, we still find inspiration in the remarkable variety of architecture that makes the East Bay home.
