Falling leaves hide more than your lawn. They can cover pest hiding spots—and a few surprises your service technician would rather avoid.

As temperatures drop, a little fall yard cleanup can help reduce pest harborage around your home:

• Clear leaf litter away from your foundation.
• Trim shrubs and other vegetation at least a foot back from the house.
• Store firewood away from your siding and foundation.
• Keep leaves from piling up on your lawn and around the house.
• Check door sweeps, window screens, and gaps around pipes for places pests could enter.

And please… pick up your dog’s “landmines.”

Leaves can camouflage them beautifully. Your pest control technician, landscaper, and anyone else working around your home will appreciate a clear path. Nobody wants that surprise on their boots—especially before an interior service.

In all seriousness, dog waste can attract flies and provide a food source for rodents. Cleaning it up is common courtesy and part of good pest prevention.

Fewer hiding places, fewer food sources, and fewer entry points give pests fewer reasons to stick around this fall.

Hartford, Connecticut ranks among America’s rattiest cities. Nukingstreet is ready to fight back!

Hartford has been listed as the 11th most rat-infested city in the country. That’s not exactly a distinction any city wants to have!

Enter Nukingstreet Pest & Wildlife Control.

We’re not your average pest control company. We’re a team of highly trained professionals who thrive on solving difficult rodent infestations that other companies struggle to control.

Our approach to rat control in Hartford, CT goes far beyond placing bait stations and hoping for the best.

We develop customized rodent management plans using mechanical, ecological, and scientifically sound pest management practices designed to address the root causes of rat infestations.

That means identifying active burrows, eliminating access points, evaluating food and water sources, reducing favorable nesting conditions, and implementing targeted rodent population management strategies.

The goal isn’t just to reduce rat activity today. It’s to create lasting results and prevent future infestations.

Whether you’re managing a large apartment complex, commercial building, restaurant, or residential property, our team has the training, experience, and determination to tackle even the most challenging rat problems.

Hartford has a rat problem. We have a solution.

The big pest control company couldn’t get the rat problem under control. Now they called Nukingstreet.

Hartford has earned a reputation for significant rat activity, and when a rodent population becomes established around a large apartment complex, solving the problem takes more than putting out a few bait stations.

We recently got the call from a Hartford apartment complex that had been dealing with ongoing rat activity despite having a large national pest control company servicing the property.

Now it’s our turn.

Our team came in to identify active rat burrows, locate nesting and feeding areas, inspect potential entry points, evaluate sanitation and conducive conditions, and develop a comprehensive rodent management strategy.

This is the kind of challenge our team gets excited about.

Successful rat control isn’t just about addressing the animals you see. It requires understanding why they’re there in the first place. Food, water, shelter, structural openings, harborage and surrounding environmental conditions can all contribute to an ongoing infestation.

Our goal is to bring the population under control, reduce the conditions attracting rodents, protect the buildings from entry, and establish an ongoing prevention program that produces measurable results.

We came in to NUKE the problem, not just manage the symptoms.

If your apartment complex, commercial property, or home in Hartford or Northern Connecticut is dealing with rats, mice, or another rodent problem, call or text 800-466-9918, visit Nukingstreet.com, DM us, or comment HELP.

Bald-Faced Hornet or Yellow Jacket? Know the Difference.

On a previous post, there was some debate about what species of stinging insect we were dealing with. When I first saw the nest from a distance, my first thought was bald-faced hornets. Once I got close enough to see the insects clearly, the yellow-and-black markings gave them away: yellow jackets.

A few people commented that yellow jackets only nest in the ground. That’s a common misconception.

Depending on the species, yellow jackets can nest in:
• Underground burrows and abandoned rodent tunnels
• Wall voids, soffits and other structural cavities
• Attics
• Trees and shrubs
• Around outdoor furniture and other protected spaces

We’ve found yellow jacket nests in some unusual places. One of the largest I’ve encountered was inside an attic, roughly 10 feet long and 4 feet wide, with thousands of yellow jackets flying around the space.

Bald-faced hornets are different. They typically construct the large, enclosed gray paper nests you see hanging from trees, shrubs or structures. They’re considerably larger than most yellow jackets and have distinctive black-and-white markings instead of yellow and black. They generally don’t establish colonies underground or inside wall voids.

Here’s where it gets interesting: despite the name, a bald-faced hornet isn’t a true hornet. Dolichovespula maculata is actually a type of aerial yellow jacket. That family resemblance is one reason people sometimes confuse the two.

Nest location can give you clues, but color, body size, markings, nest construction and behavior are much better tools for identifying what you’re dealing with.

And regardless of the species, don’t get close to an active nest just to figure it out. Disturbing a mature yellow jacket or bald-faced hornet colony can result in multiple stings very quickly.

🥊 Yellow jackets get knocked out!

These yellow jackets picked an appropriate place for their nest: right on top of a punching bag.

Unfortunately, the homeowner almost bumped into it without realizing it was there. One accidental hit or moving the bag could have disturbed the colony and triggered multiple yellow jackets to defend their nest.

Late summer and early fall are peak times for yellow jacket and wasp activity in Connecticut and Massachusetts. Nests can turn up in unexpected places around homes, garages, sheds, decks, stone walls, and landscaping.

We came in, treated the nest safely, and knocked out the problem before anyone got stung.

If you discover a yellow jacket, wasp, or hornet nest around your property, give it some space and let us handle it.

Got him!

After two days of trapping, we caught the woodchuck that had been terrorizing this old farm property. He was a pretty good-sized groundhog, and he was definitely not happy about being caught.

This guy had been digging up the yard and causing problems around the porch of the log cabin. We eventually located his active underground burrow, which allowed us to properly target our trapping efforts.

Woodchucks are serious excavators. Their burrow systems can extend underneath porches, sheds, decks and other structures, potentially causing damage as they continue digging and expanding their tunnels.

Now this guy is off to live his best woodchuck life at a state park, away from the structures he was damaging.

If you have a woodchuck, groundhog or other nuisance wildlife digging around your property, call or text Nukingstreet Pest & Wildlife at 800-466-9918, visit www.nukingstreet.com, DM us or comment Help.

This woodchuck has been terrorizing this property for a while.

The property is an old farm with a log cabin, and the homeowner has been dealing with damage around the porch and holes being dug throughout the yard. Woodchucks, also called groundhogs, are powerful diggers and can create extensive underground burrow systems around homes, barns, sheds, decks and other structures.

While investigating the property, I accidentally opened a small hole into one of the underground tunnels. When I looked inside, there it was: a very much alive woodchuck staring back from inside the burrow.

Finding the burrow is an important part of solving a woodchuck problem. Simply filling visible holes usually isn’t enough when the animal is still actively using the tunnel system. The goal is to identify the active burrows, remove the animal legally and safely, and then address the areas that are allowing continued digging around the structure.

If a groundhog or woodchuck is digging around your porch, foundation, shed, barn or yard, don’t wait for the damage to get worse.
