Summer Rain, Puddles & Leptospirosis

Summer rain can be a welcome relief from the heat, but those puddles left behind can pose a hidden risk to our dogs: leptospirosis.

Leptospirosis is a bacterial infection that can spread through water or soil contaminated with the urine of infected wildlife and other animals. After heavy rain, standing water and muddy areas can become potential sources of exposure. Dogs may be exposed by drinking from puddles, walking through contaminated water, or having contact with contaminated soil.

โš ๏ธ A few simple precautions can help:

Keep your dog from drinking out of puddles or standing water.
Avoid areas with stagnant water, especially after heavy rain.
Keep your dog away from wildlife and areas where rodents may have urinated.
Keep your dog vaccinated against leptospirosis. Talk with your veterinarian about whether the vaccine is appropriate for your dog.

Leptospirosis can cause serious illness, but prevention and early veterinary care can make a big difference. If your dog develops signs such as vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, fever, changes in urination, or loss of appetite after possible exposure, contact your veterinarian promptly.

๐ŸŒง๏ธ Enjoy those summer walksโ€”just steer clear of the puddles and keep those vaccines up to date! ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿ’›
