The numbers are scary! It's time to rethink, reimagine, and transform the role of manager. Employee engagement and well-being levels have generally risen over the past decade, but both fell in 2024, with managers experiencing the sharpest decline.

Manager engagement fell from 30% to 27%, while individual contributor engagement remained flat at 18%. Engagement among managers under the age of 35 fell by five percentage points; female manager engagement dropped by seven points, according to the 2024 State of the Global Workplace Report by Gallup.

Managers are squeezed between executive priorities and employee expectations. New demands, pressures, and expectations have taken a toll on managers.

The world’s workplace is trending in the wrong direction. We must rely on science-based management practices to find the way forward.

We must do better. It's time to rethink and redefine the role of managers.

Thanks to Gallup and authors Jim Harter and Ryan Pendell.

Are you future-ready? The best leadership practices of yesterday are no longer relevant today. That environment doesn't exist any longer. Agility is the new necessary leadership skill over ability.

Learn "how to rethink the work day" and become "future-ready" in this podcast (32 minutes) by Adam Grant at the World Economic Forum.

This is NOT a political post. Learn more about the importance of rule of law in maintaining a free and civil society, separation of powers, and 3 equal and separate branches of government.

We are facing a constitutional crisis. This is an essential read if you care about our democracy and the foundational principles on which our country was built. We should all CARE (regardless of political affiliation) about upholding and protecting the principles embedded in the US Constitution.

Thanks to the Institute for the Advancement of the American Legal System (IAALS) and CEO Brittany Kauffman for standing up for the rule of law and an independent, fair, and trustworthy judicial system that is free from political interference, threats, and disinformation.

Thanks also to the many other leaders and legal organizations that are banding together to speak loudly and in solidarity against the threats and attacks that are undermining and casting doubt on the judicial branch.

I see you. I hear you. I support you.

Resilience is the cornerstone of enduring leadership and thriving organizations. Resilience must be a deliberate practice that is woven into the fabric of a team’s culture and a leader’s mindset. Start now; here's how!

1. Prepare before the storm.
2. Build trust - the glue that holds a team together.
3. Be adaptable.
4. Build structural resilience - design flexible and fluid structures.
5. Develop cultural resilience - foster a culture that learns, is innovative, and comes together around a collective purpose.
6. Maintain strategic resilience - use disruption as an opportunity for growth.

Resilience isn’t a one-time achievement; it’s a muscle that must be exercised. The leader's role is to debrief with their teams (e.g., what worked, didn't work, and how can we improve) and turn experience into wisdom, preparing the organization for the next challenge.

It’s not about avoiding crises but about building teams and systems that can rise to meet them. Leaders, do the above, and your team and organization will be prepared to thrive during the next disruption or crisis.

People tend to stay at organizations where they feel connected. It's time to shift from (or add to) traditional metrics like performance and productivity to a more profound measure: human connection.

Human connection is at the heart of employee retention; it is the glue that holds organizations together.

Research shows that employees who feel a strong sense of connection with their team and leadership are more likely to stay, perform better, and contribute positively to the workplace culture. This connection isn’t just about social interactions but also about feeling aligned with the organization’s mission and values.

Traditional engagement scores and pulse surveys capture sentiment but often miss the depth of human connection. To measure human experience, organizations need to look at:

1. Quality of relationships
2. Sense of belonging
3. Alignment of purpose

If you are trying to improve employee retention, focus on the entire human experience at work, and prioritize human connection. Read on for ways to create an environment where people genuinely want to stay.
