Visible Addresses Can Save Critical Time in an Emergency
DOTHAN, Ala.— When firefighters, paramedics or law enforcement are responding to an emergency, finding the right home quickly can make a major difference.
Fire and rescue agencies across the region are reminding residents about a simple safety step that can help first responders during an emergency: Make sure your address is clearly visible from the road.
The reminder is especially important across the Wiregrass, where many homes are located along rural roads or sit at the end of long driveways.
Residents are encouraged to take a few minutes to walk to the road and look back at their property as an approaching emergency vehicle would see it.
House numbers should be large and easy to read. Reflective numbers can make addresses easier to spot at night when headlights shine on them. If a home sits far from the roadway, displaying the address near the driveway or mailbox can help responders identify the property.
Trees, bushes, decorations and other objects should not block the numbers. Residents should also make sure the address faces the road and can be seen from the direction emergency crews would approach.
Lighting near an address can provide additional visibility after dark.
During an emergency, every second matters. Making sure your address is visible before help is needed could make it easier for firefighters, EMS or law enforcement to find your home when time matters most.
