Katie (McCoin) Garthwaite was born and raised in Condon, Oregon, where she grew up on her family ranch. It was there that her lifelong love for animals and horses began.
From an early age, Katie spent much of her time horseback, riding on the family cattle ranch and competing in rodeos across the pacific Northwest. Katie was always active, fiercely competitive, and one the prettiest girl around but also very much a tomboy - riding quads, hunting with her brother, playing in the creek and in the hills. Katie became an incredible athlete and fierce competitor, leading her high school basketball team to the state championships and qualifying for the National High School Rodeo champions all four years of high school.
One of her greatest highlights of her rodeo career came in 1999 when she qualified and completed at the National Finals Rodeo (NRF) in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Her love of horses and riding would eventually take her across the country and beyond. After meeting and marrying her best friend, Mike, they moved to Logan Lake, Canada, and made their home on Mikeโs family ranch. There they raised their daughter, Gracie Ann. During her years in Canada, Katie competed in the Canadian Pro Rodeo Association and qualified multiple times for the Canadian Finals rodeo in barrel racing. She also qualified for and competed and the legendary Calgary Stampede.
Between rodeos and ranching, Katie and Mike found another exciting adventure together in the firm industry, working as horse wrangles and stunt actors on movie sets around the world โ even traveling as far as China! It was truly an extraordinary chapter in their lives.
In 2018, Mike and Katie returned to Oregon to help work on Katieโs family ranch, and for Gracie to finish high school compete in the same PNW rodeos that Katie had competed in as a youth and young adult. Mike and Katie also continued training and raising performance horses together.

In November of 2022, Katie received the devastating diagnosis of ALS. Since then, she has faced countless challenges in her fight for life.
Shortly after receiving her diagnosis, doctors gave her a prognosis of just two to five years and told her there was little hope. Kate, with her fighting will, grit and determination to never give up, has refused to accept that outcome!
Katie has pursued a variety of non-traditional treatments in her determination to fight this disease. She had done a tremendous amount of research, sharing all that she learns, which has given others hope.
Katieโs treatments are not covered by insurance and come with significant financial costs, but through it all Katie has remained strong, resilient, and determined to keep fighting for more time with the people she loves.
โค๏ธThis horse raffle will provide funds for Katie to continue to receive treatments that have allowed her to battle ALS to slow the progression of symptoms.
โค๏ธ Every share helps spread the word.
