EMERGENCY WATER

For today’s gift guide for personal/office/dorm preparedness, I want to discuss water. FEMA recommends 1 gallon of water per person per day. For most people, a 3-day supply is sufficient; however, for many, that is not enough. I always say that if you have a hazard in your area that may cause significant disruption to infrastructure, you should have a minimum of 2 weeks worth of supplies, if not 3 weeks. This means, a family of 4 who needs 2 weeks supply of water, needs 56 gallons of water. That’s a lot of water!

What I recommend is to have 3 days supply of water on hand, and then the ability to produce more water once your on-hand water supplies get low. Here are my recommended ways to produce water that removes the microorganism bugs from the water that can make you sick.

First is the Iodine pills with the neutralizer tabs. This is great for filling up a water bottle and an easy product to use. It is also a great product if funds are tight.

A great product to put in your emergency go kit is the LifeStraw. This product is made to filter water for personal consumption. If you are on the move and come across the creek, you can drink from the creek. The only downside to this is that it doesn’t help you produce water for consumption later.

Now these next couple of products are my favorite products to use. The previous products I use as my back up to my back up. First is the hiking filter. You drop one end into a soure of water that needs filtered, and then you pump the water through the filter and what is produced is excellent drinking water. I’ve even used this product to filter water from mud puddles which has produced amazing drinking water.

Finally, there is the UV pen. Fill your drinking container with nonpotable water, stick the pen into the water, and according to the size of volume, you turn the UV light on and within a minute the UV light has destroyed all the microorganisms in the water making it safe to drink. This is also a great product if you are traveling around the world. With that glass of water in front of you, you place your UV pen into the glass of water, and within a minute, you can drink the water with no fear of getting sick.

Water is probably the most important factor when it comes to survival. By taking the time to make sure you can produce water in times of need, you can extend your ability to be independent while waiting for water infrastructure to return.

With the holiday season upon us, I think it is time to think about personal preparedness. We have seen several interesting events happen in this country, and the globe for that matter, that perhaps we should be thinking about how we can be more resilient with our food needs. By canning, an individual can take charge of their own food securities.

Now, it is true that canning can be dangerous, and you can get sick from eating canned foods. The secret to not getting sick is simply follow tried and true canning recipes that are approved. The cookbook that I trust my life to is this great one from Ball.

Once you have everything you need for canning, the great thing is you can use the discounted produce at your local supermarket to make amazing canned goods. The produce may only last a day or so, but the canned goods will easily last for over a year. One of my favorite things to can, is that large turkey. Most supermarkets often have turkey on sale, if not free altogether. Following Thanksgiving dinner, I LOVE making and canning Turkey a la King which can be found in the canning book above.

Have a plan, have food stability in your home.
