The Internal Revenue Service announced that the optional standard mileage rate for business use of automobiles will increase by 2.5 cents in 2026, while the mileage rate for vehicles used for medical purposes will decrease by half a cent, reflecting updated cost data and annual inflation adjustments.

The IRS has moved the tax filing deadline for to May 17. First quarter estimated payments remain due on 4/15. Many tax changes were enacted by the American Rescue Plan Act, some retroactive to 2020. IR-2021-59, March 17, 2021 — The Treasury Department and Internal Revenue Service announced today that the federal income tax filing due date for individuals for the 2020 tax year will be automatically extended from April 15, 2021, to May 17, 2021.

So many people have lost family, friends, and colleagues this year. With a lump in my throat today, I worked on the final return for a very successful, driven, and kind client and friend who's been with me for 11 years. She wrote these words on LinkedIn last year after I prepared her return, and her words touched me deeply. I'd received her permission to share it last year, but for some reason, never got around to it. What she says is true - with a virtual practice, there are so many clients I've never met face-to-face - but over the years we get to know each other more deeply and I look forward to catching up with each and every one of them every year. I'm along for so many major life events - marriages, new children, divorces, new homes, watching kids grow and need returns of their own, retirements, and sadly - even death from time to time. Her loss is felt deeply, even over the distance, and she is missed.
