This is how you develop social intelligence.

What communication style is the person on the other end of this conversation? How does that mesh with your own style? What have your past conversations looked like with this individual? When we are so focused on ourselves and don't notice those around us, that is where the conflict happens. Recognizing and really seeing the person in front of you is vital to understanding how to communicate better.

Interrupted and then called a "witch" for responding appropriately. While sexism in the workplace is completely unacceptable, it still exists in many, many businesses. When those micro aggressions or incidents occur, I want you to be prepared and leave the conversation feeling empowered. Give these a go and remember body language/ tone also sends a message.

This is how you graduate from reacting to responding.

What was your physiological reaction? If your palms started sweating and your knees got heavy, notice it. Every reaction is valid but many of us skip over how the conversation made us FEEL. Building awareness around your body as you communicate with others is vital to understanding how to communicate better.

This is unfortunately very common. I've been in the language and communication field for over 20 years and the amount of times I've witnessed someone struggling in a leadership role should be studied.

They are great at their job, they understand the company, they may even share the same values but that does not automatically mean they are fit for a role in leadership! That doesn't mean they can't develop into a good leader, it just means that sufficient, in depth training is required for them to become one.

D — Detect: Notice what is happening internally—your emotions, body language, assumptions, and reactions.
A — Assess: Pay attention to what the other person may be communicating through their tone, words, pace, and nonverbal cues.
N — Navigate: Use that information to decide how to move forward, including whether now is the right time for the conversation.
C — Connect: Ask questions, check for understanding, and stay open to changing direction as the conversation unfolds.
E — Empower: Protect and improve the relationship, even when the conversation does not end with the outcome you expected.

Let’s D-A-N-C-E !!

The DANCE method is a five step communication technique that can be used to build connection. I was inspired to create the five steps when I realized that much of the education surrounding communication was focused on the how and not the why. Our why should always be to connect. Without connection, strategic communication is simply manipulation. No one wants that!

Connection is the name of the game.

As a Communication Specialist, my main focus is to help people connect. Sometimes it can be done in a group setting like a Keynote or an interactive workshop and sometimes it can be achieved through 1:1s where individual attention is needed. It’s my job to give you the tools you need to succeed but also to find empathy, even when there’s friction.
