Some people retire once, some people retire twice, and then there’s Steve Ulrich.
After all, apparently, retirement is less of a permanent decision and more of a “see you in a little while” for Steve. Steve first joined The Plastek Group in 2009 in Erie, Pennsylvania. A few years later, he packed up and headed south with a group of amazing employees to help build something from the ground up — in Hamlet, North Carolina. Starting a new facility is never easy. Starting one that would grow into the operation HMD is today takes an incredible amount of dedication, patience, leadership, and probably a healthy tolerance for chaos. Steve brought all of that — and then some. Over the years, HMD has experienced its fair share of challenges, changes, growing pains, and more than a few hurdles that seemed impossible at the time. Through it all, Steve remained committed to the people, the plant, and the success of HMD. He officially retired in 2018, and then came 2021. Apparently, Steve decided he wasn't quite done with us yet and returned to HMD, bringing his experience, leadership, and that unmistakable Steve Ulrich determination back with him. Then, in January 2026, he did it again. At this point, we probably should have stopped believing him when he said he was retiring. After years of leadership, hard work, problem-solving, and dedication, Steve has helped guide HMD to an incredible milestone. The operation he helped start has grown, evolved, overcome challenges, and become something that can proudly be passed forward. That is an incredible legacy.
So, Steve, from all of us at HMD ,Thank you for your commitment, your dedication, for the long days, the difficult decisions, the lessons, the laughs, and the countless moments that helped shape HMD into what it is today. Thank you for coming back when you didn't have to. And thank you for apparently believing that retirement was optional. But most of all, thank you for leaving HMD in a place where you can finally step away knowing that the foundation you helped build is strong enough to carry forward. We wish you nothing but the best in this next chapter. Enjoy the retirement, Steve,For real this time.
