What is going in your garden this season?

Most of us only think about smoke and CO detectors when the batteries chirp at 2 AM.

But if you own a home or rental, those little plastic circles are doing way more than annoying you. They’re the difference between “scary close call” and “total disaster.”

Quick reality check:

Smoke detectors catch fires early, especially while you’re sleeping

Carbon monoxide detectors catch a gas you can’t see, smell, or taste

Having the wrong type, in the wrong spot, or not working at all is way more common than you’d think

I just put together a simple guide:
“Do I Need a Smoke or Carbon Monoxide Detector?”

In a few minutes you’ll see:

Why you actually need both

Where I put them in real client homes (bedrooms, hallways, basements, near appliances)

👉 Read it here: https://www.colincanhelp.com/do-i-need-a-smoke-or-carbon-monoxide-detector/

After you skim it, you’ll know: “I’m good” or “I’ve got some fixing to do.” There’s not much in between.

In response to community concerns, the Shaker Heights Police Department will mount a special traffic enforcement initiative from Monday, April 6, through Monday, May 4, focused on areas where residents have specifically requested increased attention. By addressing ongoing traffic-related issues in this proactive and visible manner, the SHPD aims to enhance roadway safety for all who live, work and visit Shaker Heights. Thank you for your cooperation.

Today I had one of those moments that reminds me how much “simple” things in home improvement aren’t actually that obvious to most people.

A homeowner asked me:
“How do they get shelves to look like they’re just floating on the wall… with nothing holding them up?”

And I said:
“You mean… floating shelves?”

She paused for a second like I had just revealed some kind of trade secret 😄

“Wait… that’s actually what they’re called?!”

Yep. Sometimes the most literal name is the right one.

So I walked her through it:
Floating shelves use hidden brackets or support systems that get mounted directly into studs. The shelf slides over that hardware, which is what gives it that clean, modern “floating” look.

No visible brackets.
No bulky supports.
Just a clean finish that instantly upgrades a space.

It’s one of those features people see all the time but don’t always know how it works — until they ask.

I figured she’s probably not the only one, so I put together a quick breakdown here:

If you’ve been thinking about adding shelves, this is one of the simplest ways to make a space look more finished without a full remodel.

Most drywall that looks terrible is actually repairable.

Cracks
Ugly patches
Old repairs
Anchor holes

Those can usually be fixed.

But when drywall becomes:

Soft
Swollen
Crumbling

That’s when it needs to be cut out and replaced.

A lot of homeowners replace drywall they could have repaired for a fraction of the cost.

I broke down exactly how to tell the difference here:

Quick landscaping tip:

Most flower beds should have 2–3 inches of mulch.

But how much mulch does that actually take?

Instead of guessing, I built a simple mulch calculator that figures it out for you.

Just enter your bed length, width, and mulch depth and it will tell you exactly how much mulch you need.

Try it here:

A lot of homeowners start a painting project thinking it will be a quick weekend job.

Then reality kicks in.

Moving furniture.
Taping trim.
Cutting in corners.
Rolling multiple coats.
Waiting for everything to dry.

Before you know it, the “quick project” has taken over the entire weekend.

Painting can absolutely be a DIY project, but getting a smooth, professional finish takes the right tools and technique.

If you're in Northeast Ohio and would rather have the project handled for you, interior painting is something Colin Can Help provides for homeowners throughout the area.
