For many of us, the allure of the Willamette Valley is rooted in its natural environment; it sustains us on many levels—physically, mentally, spiritually, communally. We feel grateful for the natural beauty here. Rowell Brokaw has been a longtime financial supporter of the McKenzie River Trust, a nonprofit land trust whose mission is to help people protect and care for the lands and rivers they cherish in western Oregon.

Rowell Brokaw volunteered for an afternoon on Green Island. At the confluence of the McKenzie and the Willamette Rivers, Green Island provides more than 1,100 acres of essential habitat for numerous species. Our group helped remove invasive blackberries. There was sunshine and clouds and rain and all the weather you’d expect in Oregon. Thank you to McKenzie River Trust for this wonderful opportunity!

The first batch of beach volleyball sand was poured this morning! The women’s team was there to celebrate the milestone. Next up: many more truckloads of sand, interior and exterior finishes on the storage building, scoreboard, and planting. The facility will be ready for fall practice in September.

Will Mau and Rodney Williams from Fortis Construction were on-site for the pour. Project Architect Andrew Cohen has been working with them since the Hamilton Walton Transformation project started in 2019. Rendering of the project by Mithun.

Alongside Tom Goodhew and Sean Lindh from LCC and Katie Sciotto from Fortis, principal Mark Young and project manager Matt Travis led Rowell Brokaw staff on a recent tour of the Building 16 Renovation at Lane Community College. The renovation modernizes science-related spaces while addressing the building’s deferred maintenance backlog.

Highlights of the tour included the juxtaposition of old and new elements. New cross bracing, pendant lighting, and AV systems are woven into the original vaulted ceiling with exposed wooden beams and a metal truss system for structural support. In the chemistry lab, you can see the extensive HVAC systems for fume hoods.

The main phase of the renovation was completed in March 2026, and the remaining renovation and sitework will be completed this summer.

A big thanks to our wonderful team:

TVA Architects – Lab Planning
Systems West Engineers - M/E/P/LV/F

This year Julia Payton and Brooke McDonald teamed up to work with middle-school classes in Pleasant Hill and in Oakridge for the Architects in Schools (AIS) program. For their final project, students designed a one-room artist’s cabin for their teacher “clients.” Julia and Brooke were impressed by the students’ creative solutions to cabin shape and layout and their thoughtful selection of fun and complimentary interior finishes for their spaces.

Rowell Brokaw welcomes Jessica Williams to the team as our new office manager. Jessi ensures that central, behind-the-scenes tasks are performed with care. Her role includes bookkeeping, payroll, HR coordination, insurance, and the general day-to-day running of the office. Thanks to Jessi’s dedicated efforts, the firm’s operations run smoothly and our team thrives.

Jessi’s administrative experience includes Apex Recycling & Disposal, Oregon Beverage Recycling Cooperative (OBRC), and Comfort Flow Heating. When she’s not managing the office, Jessi balances life as a mom with running her own small business, Memories Photography. A brief Q&A:

If you weren't an office manager, what might you have done instead? I would most likely be more involved with photography or singing. I've always had a huge passion for the arts and have been singing since elementary school.

Favorite book? My favorite book series is The Shepherd King duology (One Dark Window and Two Twisted Crowns). It is a dark fantasy with a unique and beautiful story.

If you weren't a human, what creature would you be? I would want to be an Orca. They are so beautiful and misunderstood creatures. I have also always loved the water, and the ocean would be a lovely place to explore.

Daffodils herald the Spring on the west lawn of Tykeson Hall at the University of Oregon. During sunset, the building’s multicolored terra cotta cladding glows. While many applications of terracotta are ornamental on campus, the terra cotta on Tykeson Hall is a high-performing rainscreen.

Rowell Brokaw remodeled LTD’s boardroom and adjacent catering/meeting spaces. The boardroom was transformed from a standard meeting room to a more elevated space suitable for public board and committee meetings. The space is designed for both in-person attendance and for broadcast viewing over local TV.

For the boardroom, the team replaced floor, wall, and ceiling finishes and inserted a custom, fixed dais and presenter table. Moveable furniture is provided for larger meetings. The u-shaped dais, detailed with rift-sawn maple veneer, anchors the space. Hemlock fir slats with a clear finish were used for the ceiling and vertical wood panels. Finishes were carefully chosen to unify the overall space while also complementing the asymmetrical room shape.

The catering/meeting rooms were refreshed with new finishes, casework and furniture. Finishes in the kitchen space include maple p-lam cabinetry, quartz countertop, and lightly variegated tile.

Thanks to Chambers Construction for their attention to detail and to KCL Engineering for their mechanical and electrical work!

Rowell Brokaw welcomes designer Lauren Johnson to the team!

Lauren values design that enriches communities by bringing vibrancy and educational awareness to a place. She brings a strong interest in sustainability and climate-responsive design to her work. With a background in parametrical design for digital fabrication, Lauren combines technical skills with a strong sense of composition and materiality. Her experience includes commercial, transportation, and residential buildings.

Lauren holds a B.Arch from the University of Oregon and an M.S. in Architecture in Design Computing from the University of Washington. She worked for Strata Architects and Hewitt Architects in Seattle before working on a 24’x8’ Tiny House on Wheels Prototype. While she ultimately decided not to start her own tiny homes company, Lauren intimately learned about materials, detailing, constructability, cost, and the inner workings of running a business. Below is a brief Q&A with Lauren:

If you weren't an architect, what profession/work might you have done instead?
I would probably work at a plant nursery. I enjoy growing and propagating plants as well as learning to identify them. I would be following in my dad’s footsteps since my parents owned a nursery when I was young.

Favorite book or movie? I am not sure about an all-time favorite book, however the most interesting book I read this year was The Swans of Harlem by Karen Valby. It is a true story of five pioneering black ballerinas starting in the 1970s. As a lover of dance this was very inspiring.

Favorite building in Eugene? The John Jaqua Academic Center for Student Athletes. I think the sculptural quality is very distinct. It is essentially a shimmery box. The infinity water feature and fountain are precisely executed making it stunning, and the interior gathering space is welcoming and relaxing. It is fun to showcase innovation on the UO campus.

If you could meet an architect (dead or alive), who would it be? It would be interesting to talk to Robert Reamer, the architect of Old Faithful Inn at Yellowstone and the creator of the iconic national park lodge style. I would like to hear how he imagined his design would affect people and draw them to the natural beauty of the parks. I know it affected me the first time I visited; I have a miniaturized Christmas tree ornament version of the building. I would also ask him the story of how the lodge was constructed.
