"Surveys" is the first word that comes to mind when many hear the term "market research." That's a simplistic reduction of a huge research field concerned with providing insights to facilitate smarter business decisions.

This is unfortunate because surveys have been overused and abused by many who don't know how to design them, so the stigma of bad surveys has been casting a halo on the whole field for a while now.

Market research involves more than data collection. Furthermore, we use other data collection methods, including those classified as qualitative research. Yes, market researchers do qualitative research as well.

Data collection is just one step of the process. In a way, that's the easy step, which is why there are so many data collection tools out there, especially survey tools. Qualitative research tools are quickly proliferating too.

However, the secret sauce in market research lies in the steps before and after data collection. Designing good research to extract insights that can help a business requires thinking in terms of business impact and knowledge of methodology and marketing to find the answers we need to create impact. It is a process.
