Aluminum vs. Steel Welding: Key Differences You Need to Know!
If you frequently switch between carbon steel and aluminum in your shop, you already know aluminum doesn't play by the same rules! Steel is forgiving, but aluminum demands precise technique, meticulous surface prep, and a complete shift in heat management.
Whether you're fabricating marine hardware, repairing heavy equipment, or tackling custom shop builds, mastering these core differences will save you hours of grinding, rework, and wasted materials:
Heat Control: Aluminum conducts heat nearly 5x faster than steel—you need high initial amperage upfront, then speed up as the workpiece heats up!
Surface Prep: Clean aluminum oxide with solvent FIRST, then use a dedicated stainless steel brush reserved only for aluminum.
Machine Setup: Use AC current for TIG cleaning action and 100% Argon or Argon/Helium shielding blends.
MIG Technique: Always PUSH your weld on aluminum—dragging draws in contaminants and leaves heavy black soot!
