MEMBERSHIP INFORMATION

The Humboldt County Farm Bureau is the oldest Farm Bureau in the State of California. In 1913, our local farmers saw the need to organize and to work on issues which affected all producers. Since 1913 many things have changed—but one thing remains the same, the need to come together to provide an important voice for the Humboldt County Agricultural community. We need to spread the word and encourage our neighbors to join Farm Bureau which helps insure that the agriculture industry here remains viable, and continues to generate financial security for the entire community. TELL A FRIEND about Farm Bureau. If you know a potential new member—please call the office at 443-4844 and we will contact them. ENGAGEMENT POLICY

Congratulations to our 2026 Friend of the Farmer, Gary Markegard!

For generations of Humboldt County agricultural families, Gary Markegard is a familiar face.

Gary served Humboldt County agriculture for 30 years as a UC Cooperative Extension Range and Livestock Farm Advisor, from 1976 until his retirement in 2006. But retirement certainly didn’t mean retiring from agriculture. Gary continued to give his time and experience wherever they were needed—from serving on the Humboldt Resource Conservation District Board to judging FFA Project Competitions and, of course, being a familiar face in the hog show ring at the Humboldt County Fair.

If you participated in FFA Project Competition, do you remember Mr. Markegard coming to visit your project? He had a way of asking the relevant questions—the ones that made you think and made sure you really knew your project. And if you spent much time around the hog ring at the Fair, chances are you remember Gary there, too, pig board in hand and ready to help.

That willingness to show up, share his knowledge, encourage young agriculturists, and help wherever he was needed is exactly what makes Gary a true Friend of the Farmer.

Please join us in honoring Gary at the Humboldt County Farm Bureau Annual Dinner on Saturday, September 5, at the River Lodge in Fortuna. Dinner and awards will be followed by a concert with Dave Stamey.

🎟️ Tickets are $100 per person or $800 for a table of eight. Ticket sales close Monday, August 31, so get yours now!

We hope you’ll join us in celebrating Gary and his many years of friendship and service to Humboldt County agriculture.

Our neighbors are getting a much needed update- limited walk-in hours during construction….

Construction began on the Humboldt County Agriculture Building Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Compliance Project last week!

When renovations are complete, they will provide a more welcoming, accessible and modernized facility to better serve all visitors who access this building, which is currently home to the Humboldt County Department of Agriculture, including the Agriculture Weights & Measures office, and Humboldt and Del Norte counties University of California Cooperative Extension (UCCE) offices and programs.

𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗗𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘀
The project will improve the community’s access to the many programs, services and activities offered at the facility by constructing a new accessible pathway to the building entrance, installing two accessible parking stalls and an accessible ramp. Work for this project also includes remodeling five restrooms to meet accessibility standards and service counter upgrades.

In addition to the ADA improvements, deferred maintenance work will include long overdue facility improvements, including the installation of a new roof and flooring, plus interior and exterior paint. These upgrades and improvements are designed to enhance accessibility and long-term use of the Humboldt County Agriculture Building.

Additionally, upon completion of this project, the Humboldt County Department of Public Works’ Natural Resources Division will relocate to the Agricultural Building to share space with the Department of Agriculture and UCCE. This move is consistent with the county’s goals included in the County of Humboldt’s 2020 Facilities Master Plan.

𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁
Work for this project is currently underway and is anticipated to be completed in May 2027. The building will remain open throughout the duration of the project.

Parking is available at the rear of the building, and the main entrance is accessible from the front.

𝗢𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗛𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀
During construction, Agricultural Department in-person office hours will be limited to Monday through Thursday, from 8 a.m. to noon. Department of Agriculture inspectors will be available for onsite inspections by appointment only, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m.

If you have questions or if you need to schedule an appointment with an inspector, please call the Agriculture Department at 707-441-5260 or email [email protected].

While construction is underway, Humboldt County UCCE’s office hours will be Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to noon. UCCE staff will be available by appointment only from 1 to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. To make an appointment, call 707-445-7351.

To accommodate construction, Humboldt County UCCE’s popular program activities, including Humboldt County’s Master Gardener and Master Food Preserver programs in addition to Humboldt’s 4-H programs, may be relocated on an as-needed basis. For more information about these programs and course offerings, please call 707-445-7351 or visit tinyurl.com/HumboldtUCCE.

For more information about the Humboldt County Agriculture Building ADA Compliance Project, please call the ADA Compliance team at 707-445-7266 or email [email protected].
