When asked: “Why don’t dispatchers like newer MCs? We need an opportunity to learn the industry just like you did”

My response was:

I’ve been dispatching almost 2 years- was in safety and compliance for 4 years prior.
Here is a couple common things that may bring some different ways of seeing it.

1) Many brokers will not give loads to carriers with MC under 6months or a year
(What that means is for independent dispatchers who do NOT have their own operating authority they are going to work much harder trying to obtain a load for a new carrier)
(SIDENOTE: independent dispatching is not automatically double brokering.)

2) many “seasoned” drivers (especially owner ops) do ALOT of the work themselves. (This equals easy money for the dispatcher.)

On the contrary though I’d like to say, that I like the newer carriers,
It’s more exciting. The learning curve and all. (Though my anxiety HAS gone up dramatically) lol

Another thing I’d like to point out is: any small dispatch service can get over capacity quite easily (1-3 dispatchers handling a “dream fleet”vs 1-3 dispatchers handling the “horror fleet” - these are 2 very different looking work environments.

And the horror… usually is not directly on the carrier… it’s often shipper/receiver related but can cause tensions between drivers and dispatcher…. They see each other at their best and their worst. They are forced to work as a team, in high pressure, high risk, high stress situations, and some people don’t work well under pressure some do, some need encouragement some want left alone,
So if you aren’t jiving through the tough parts, it’s better to find a dispatcher that suits you.

My priority carrier (the VIP) and myself , spend a tremendous amount of time on the phone- we know each other better than most, and yet have only been face to face a small number of times. We got each other through bankruptcy, we lived each other’s learning curve, and then like a well oiled machine… all the sudden things will start to flow smoothly…

Hang in there… trucking isn’t for (derogatory term here) lol
