Our second project for Season 2 of Hometown Takeover has aired! We were involved in more steps of this project, the historic building that is home to the Queen Lounge. For those that might have a property with a vintage neon sign, projecting from the wall (as this one is), or freestanding as the Fort Morgan Bowling Alley sign is, we have a few suggestions. An entire rework of the sign to it's former glory is always possible, but with a few choices as the years pass, you will make the restoration a bit easier. First, keep the inside of the sign free of birds. There are access panels that sometimes disappear in the wind, and small corners where birds can gain entrance, and they will nest there for years. As time passes, the nesting materials and bird waste will build, holding moisture that encourages rust and adds weight. Second, do your best to keep it painted. Signs of this vintage are usually made of galvanized metal, which can be challenging to keep paint stuck to, but even touch up painting will help keep rust away. The Queen Lounge sign had beautiful art deco elements that were part of the shape and surface design, and by sheeting over with the panels for Queen Lounge, those details remain intact for any future restoration efforts, while still providing effective signage for the current owners and their business. Congratulations Fort Morgan and the Queen Lounge, it was great to be a part of the process!
