I haven't been on my Youtube Channel in a long time, but felt inspired today to share some thoughts on my favorite topic: decluttering with kids! Specifically, what happens when I feel totally overwhelmed by ALL THE KID STUFF in my home 😩 and how I work through it 🄳

I have made this mistake and, trust me, there’s a better way 🤩 Decluttering with kids can be fun, if your timing is good and your energy is ready! ...

Decluttering feels overwhelming when you try to tackle too much at once. That's why I encourage you to focus on small & specific categories of items. When you stay focused on one category, it's more likely that you'll feel successful and want to continue decluttering.

Click below for my list of 50 small categories that you might want to declutter. Start anywhere on the list and get as many done as you can!

If you want help creating a list specific to your home - and a plan to help you finish it - please send me a message. I'd love to help.

Have a child that doesn't want to get rid of anything (or partner ... or maybe you struggle with this)?

Try choosing ONE category and then setting the criteria BEFORE you go through the category.

**Instead of saying, "There are so many toys in here. We need to get rid of some of these!"

***You might say: "There are so many toys in here! But let's just go through the trucks and find all the ones that are missing wheels."

Even better, ask the child to help set the criteria.

Setting criteria before you declutter will help make some of the decisions easier.

The Possibility of Clutter

I had a zoom call with a decluttering client last week and asked her what she felt when she saw all of her clothes piled on her bed.

ā€œDoes it stress you out to see all of that piled together?ā€

ā€œNo,ā€ she said, ā€œit makes me think of possibility!ā€ 🤩

We went on with our decluttering session and she got rid of a lot of clothes. I was surprised, considering the clothes represented something so HOPEFUL just a few minutes before.

But, as it turns out, her decluttering decisions didn’t devalue or detract from the possibility of those clothes… they just offered that value to someone else 🄰 What a gift!

Days later, I’m still thinking about the beauty in sharing our possibilities and the way this client embraced a chance for generosity.

One Way to Reduce the Back-to-School paper clutter.

If you’re busy and don’t want to commit to filtering out papers as they enter your home, then decide WHERE THE PAPERS WILL LIVE - and decide now, before they get a chance to overwhelm you!

šŸ¤“ Papers you want to hold onto for a little while.
šŸ˜… Papers you never want to see again.
āœļø Papers that need to go back to the school.
🄰 Papers you want to keep forever.

Where will they live? A folder, box or bulletin board? Those are all good options. The key is to promise yourself to go through the papers as soon as the designated space gets full.

You can do it šŸ™ŒšŸ½

Decluttering with kids? Here’s how I do it…

Step 1. Choose a small, specific category. Sure, the whole room might be a mess, but choosing one category will keep you all focused and increase the chances that you’ll feel successful at the end.

Step 2. Hold up one item at a time and decide whether to keep it or let it go.

Step 3. Resist the urge to second guess your kids! Yes, you’re focused on cleaning the room, but more importantly, you’re showing your kids that they can make good decisions AND that decluttering can be fun.

Step 4. Celebrate the kids! Even a simple, ā€œYou made some great decisions! Your room feels so much calmer now!ā€ can be encouraging to them.

If you want help decluttering with your kids, let me know. I would love to work with you and your family 🄳

Does the fear of regret keep you from making difficult decluttering decisions?

Turns out REGRET isn't usually a thing to fear. First of all, it's inevitable! It happens to all of us. Even more importantly, regret often brings with it a chance to learn about ourselves.

Let's say you donate an item and 6 months from now, you wish you had it again. Well, in that feeling of regret, you've probably gained some clarity on who you are, what your values are and what your life involves... that's invaluable information! At the very least, it'll set you up to make better decisions in the future.

So, don't go TRYING to regret things šŸ˜… but just know that it's not a reason to hold on to things!

It's been a long time and I really shouldn'tve left you ...

Somehow summer break is almost over! As we transition from Summer wardrobes to Fall clothes, ask yourself if you can make this promise:

I won't store the clothes I don't like. I won't store the clothes that don't work for me.
************
If you have summer clothes that didn't work for you this season, then it's probably OK to let them go. Don't waste your time and money on boxing and bagging them just to donate them next summer!

If you’re a sentimental type who wants to keep all your Father’s Day/Mother’s Day cards …

Choose a box. Any box, but it needs to fit comfortably in your home… maybe under your bed or on a shelf in your closet.

That’s your Card Box. Keep all your cards in there forever. But, when the collection grows and the cards no longer fit, then it’s time to declutter…

- Dump out all your cards. Find a few of your favorites. They’ll set the standard for the rest of your choices.
- Do a quick scan for easy choices to get rid of.
- Do a closer look for cards that are blank or just have a signature. (If it’s hard to let go of these, compare them to your favorites … remind yourself that you’re letting go of these to make room for your faves).
- Repeat as necessary until the collection fits in the box 🄳🄳🄳🄳

Want to spend less time decluttering??

Try to be thoughtful about every item that comes into your home!

See something you want to buy? Picture where it will live in your home - which room? Which shelf? Which cabinet? Answer these questions as specifically as possible!

If you can’t answer these questions, then either leave the item in the store or decide what you’ll get rid of to make room for it in your home 🤠
