Lot 202--Antique High-Wheeler or Penny Farthing Bicycle
This exceptional machine is a genuine, top-tier Columbia Light Roadster manufactured by the Pope Manufacturing Company of Boston, Massachusetts, boasting a 59-inch front wheel alongside a 17.5-inch trailing rear wheel. Confirming its strict mechanical authenticity, the brass steering head features crisp, hand-stamped factory patent markings reading "Jan. 10, 1882" and "July 3, 1883", referencing Albert E. Wallace’s legendary dust-shielded ball-bearing hub design. The bicycle is in remarkably preserved estate-fresh condition, retaining its original leather suspension saddle and complete frame assembly. The mechanical configuration remains incredibly complete, outfitted with a front-wheel caliper spoon brake mechanism, an original frame-mounted mounting step, block pedals, and a vintage hub-mounted mechanical odometer tucked between the front wheel spokes. Exhibiting a deep, uniform historic patina across the frame alongside expected age texturing and deteriation to the original solid rubber tires, this monumental 59" Columbia survivor represents an extraordinary, investment-grade acquisition for museums, advanced transportation historians, or elite Americana collectors. missing front badge. Includes Historical Souvenir Program Sesquicentennial Madison Indiana 1809-1959. The family believes the bike is pictured in this program.
