The neighbour has been cutting his at two inches since Labor Day because the season is nearly over and short looks tidy, and by April his lawn will be the one with the crabgrass, and he will blame the crabgrass.

Tonight, stand a ruler in your grass. Under two and a half, and the deck is too low. Put it back up to three, or as close as the lever goes, and leave it there through the fall.

The roots are about as deep as the grass is tall. Cut it short in September and the roots stop, the plant goes into winter thin, and every crabgrass seed on the ground gets the light it needs in spring. Leave it tall and the canopy shades the seed out. The very last cut of the year can come down a little. This is not the last cut.

If your lawn is bermuda or zoysia, ignore all of this. Yours runs short on purpose.

Read the ruler. That is the whole check. 🌙
